GLOBAL took a chance on Koray Gunduzoglu. And the booter has continued to repay the faith.
In just his third game and first start for the defending United Football League champions, the 19-year-old Turkish booter stood out for the powerhouse squad, which cruised past Nomads, 4-0, on Thursday night at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig to stay within reach of the leader.
Gunduzoglu, who was acquired from Turkey with the help of the Azkals’ Filipino-German standout Stephan Schrock, scored for the second straight game, firing a brace this time to lead Global, which moved back to second place ahead of Loyola Meralco and just two points behind Stallion.
“I had problems (in Turkey),” Gunduzoglu said without elaborating. “Now with a new beginning and new chance, I’m happy.”
The attacking midfielder scored both his goals in the first half as Global appeared poised to pull away despite missing coach Brian Reid and player Jason de Jong to suspensions and players Jeffrey Christiaens and Carli de Murga to injuries.
“Coach gave me my confidence and my fitness back and I want to make more goals,” Gunduzoglu said.
“He’s a good addition to the team, good skills. But he still needs more time to blend with the team,” team owner Dan Palami said. “There were certain times when he was hesitant or indecisive to make some passes, but I think as we play more games, he’ll be able to adapt better.”
After Izzo El-Habib tripled the lead by finding the back of the net 11 minutes after the restart, Global took advantage of a Nomads side that went a man down after Hacker was booked a second straight yellow card.
And Joshua Beloya, another late Global acquisition, pounced on the extra space as he scored in the 78thminute off a pass from fellow substitute Niño Ochoterena to cap off the rout that dealt Nomads its fifth straight defeat.
“We missed the coach there, but I think he prepared them well for this game so I didn’t really have much to do except to make sure that they follow the directions properly and they play with their heart and everything they got,” Palami said.
