GREEN Archers United finally avoided a collapse, scoring a 2-1 win over Nomads behind the heroics of Chieffy Caligdong on Tuesday night in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
The Azkals skipper registered a brace, but it was his second goal late in second-half stoppage time that mattered more as it broke the deadlock and gave the Archers only their second win in nine games for seven points.
The eighth-running Archers also arrested a three-game slide to end their first-round campaign on a bright note, while Nomads stayed in sixth spot with 11 points.
“At last, ito ang hinihintay namin,” a relieved Archers coach Rodolfo Alicante said. “Ito ang magpapabalik ng morale ng team.”
“It’s a good start para sa second round,” Caligdong said. “Pagpatuloy namin yung game na tulad nito, yung passing nandun na kami. Kailangan lang more practice.”
Caligdong put the Archers on the scoreboard six minutes before first-half stoppage time, but the squad let its guard down early in the second half when Nomads retaliated just two minutes after the restart with a goal from Fidelis Nnabuife.
Just when the match appeared headed for a draw, Caligdong followed up his first goal with the game winner off the rebound.
“It was a good team effort,” Caligdong said. “May mga errors lang sa start ng second half so yun yung dapat naming i-correct.”
