Bro Football Cup to drop 7-a-side format

Wednesday, April 24, 2013
TO HELP improve the quality of competition, the 2nd Bro National Football Festival will use the 9-a-side and 11-a-side format for its tournament that will start tomorrow at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
Organizers Engr. Keith Buyco, Engr. Rodney Orale and Coach Glen Ramos, and Philippine national team player Chieffy Caligdong, decided that introducing the youth to 11-a-side will hone their skills.
“With this, the kids can explore the field and will learn the rules such as offside,”said Buyco.
Football festivals usually use the seven-a-side format and Ramos, a member of the national Under 19 coach staff, says the new format means the players will develop their passing skills.
The format will apply in the Boys and Girls 14, Boys 15, Boys and Girls 17, and Boys
19 categories while Players 7, Players 8, Players 9, Players 10, Men’s and Ladies Open, Executive 36 and 42 will use the 9- a-side format.
The idea was hatched by Caligdong, who is now a partner of the festival with his Chieffy Caligdong Football Para sa Bayan program.
Caligdong said that a 7-a-side format suits younger ages like 6-12 but for kids beyond that, it will give them more advantage to learn the ropes in an 11-a-side format.
“The kids will be able to learn when they become elite players. At least with this program, the adjustment will be easy,” said the national team midfielder.
Caligdong is pushing his program under the Ten Moves campaign, which aims to build 10,000 classrooms in a year.
As he forwards this advocacy, he also encourages young players, especially those in the provinces to come out and join more tournaments.
“Naniniwala ako na hindi lang dapat basta tournament, dapat may mga natutunan ang mga bata,” Caligdong said.
Because of the new format, the number of teams dropped from 196 to 174. The group also scrapped the Inter-BPO category, which is hampered by player eligibility issues.
The Players 8, Players 10, Boys 12, Boys and Girls 14, B19 and Executive 36 is slated this Friday, while the Players 7, Players 9, Boys 11, Boys 13, Boys 15, Boys 17, and Girls 17 and Executive 42 will be this Saturday. The Men’s and Ladies Open will be on Sunday.
