PFL: Uzoka’s brace leads Cebu’s five-goal rout over Maharlika Manila

 By

Chima Uzoka produced his second brace of the 2022-2023 Philippines Football League season as Dynamic Herb Cebu came back from a goal down to trump Maharlika Manila, 5-1, at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

The National University alumnus scored a header in the 26th minute and converted from close range in the 56th minute to give Cebu a two-goal cushion.

After Uzoka equalized in the first half, Arda Cinkir gave Cebu its first taste of the lead in the 30th minute when he headed in JB Borlongan’s cross.

Mert Altinoz and Marius Kore then capped everything off for Cebu with their respective clinical free kicks in the 63rd and 87th minutes.

Cebu’s five-goal rampage offset a shocking start for them as Maharlika Manila’s Jerold Facturanan broke the deadlock in the first minute of the game while he was unmarked in the opposition box.

The result allows Dynamic Herb Cebu to climb to third place with eight points on the back of two wins, two draws, and one loss.

On the other hand, Maharlika sits in seventh place and is yet to tally a point this season after suffering its sixth straight loss.

PFL: United City returns to action with win over Stallion Laguna

𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋-𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 | Stallion Laguna's comeback bid comes up short, and the visitors hold on for the victory. Thanks to goals from Kenshiro Daniels, Amirbek Juraboev, Ricky Sendra, and Mark Hartmann.

By

After three weeks since their last game, United City got their 2022-2023 Philippines Football League campaign back on track with a 4-2 victory over Stallion Laguna, Saturday evening, at the Binan Football Stadium.

Kenshiro Daniels broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when he scored via a header off a corner. Up 1-0 by halftime, the defending champions went on a rampage after the break.

“As a team, we performed alright. We got a bit sloppy towards the end,” said Daniels. “That wasn’t our best game but we did what we needed to do.”

Amirbek Juraboev tapped home Pika Minegishi’s assist in the 50th minute while Argentinian midfielder Ricardo Sendra gave United City a three-goal cushion with a fine finish in the 64th minute.

Mark Hartmann then scored United City’s fourth goal of the match in the 72nd minute to seal the win. It was his third goal of the season.

“Big break in between games. It’s hard to keep fitness. Everyone’s professional, everyone’s trying to do what they can, but nothing’s the same as match fitness and I think that showed in at the end of the game,” added Daniels.

Stallion Laguna tried to retaliate but it was a case of too little too late. Jo Warren Bedia combined with Abou Sy to pull one back in the 80th minute while United City’s Alan Robertson put the ball at the back of his own net following a cross from Bryan Ybanez in the 87th minute.

The result means that United City increases its tally to 10 points in second place, which is five away from league leaders Kaya-Iloilo.

Philippines 1-2 New Zealand

The Philippine Women’s National Team concluded their US training camp with a 1-2 defeat to 22nd ranked and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 co-hosts New Zealand in an international friendly last Tuesday, 06 September 2022 (Wednesday morning Manila time) at the Titan Stadium in Fullerton, California.

Sarina Bolden gifted the Philippines with a shock lead in first half stoppage time. Midfielder Sara Eggesvik found the forward with an inviting ball to the box, allowing Bolden to fire a volley past the New Zealand goal.

However, New Zealand equalized in the 71st minute from the penalty spot after the Philippines conceded a penalty allowing Meikayla Moore to slot home the spot kick past Olivia McDaniel.

New Zealand completed the turnaround seven minutes from time as Ali Riley struck home from close range to put the Football Ferns ahead.

Not to be undone, the Filipinas pressed on for a late equalizer and agonizingly came close to finding it right before full-time, but substitute Jessika Cowart’s header was denied by the post.

Head coach Alen Stajcic thought the match, which was the culmination of the team’s training camp, was a perfect gauge of the team’s capability against higher ranked teams.

“It was a good performance against a strong and experienced team,” said Stajcic after the match. “We have to compete, but we have to win. I am happy we competed and showed that we are at this level, but we have to find a way to win.”
