THE Medvil Football Club of Davao City posted one win and one loss to place second in Group B of the ongoing Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki Cup Under-23 National Cup at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City as of Tuesday.
Medvil-Davao bowed to defending champion Ceres-Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa), 0-5, in the group eliminations late Monday.
Medvil-Davao head coach Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon, in a text message to Sun.Star Davao on Tuesday, said: "Sorry Davao, we lost."
Carreon earlier predicted a "very intense game" against the reigning champs, adding that they needed "to step up in defense, provide pressure and to attack ground ball as much as possible" since Ceres players are taller than the Dabawenyos.
"Ceres-Nofa players are very strong. Our boys, who are shorter, succumbed to nerves. Yoshiharu Koizumi is the only tall player we have but he wasn't able to play due to a head injury," Carreon explained.
Koizumi, who attempted a diving header in the 25th minute of their game against Masbate, was accidentally hit by the rival team's goalkeeper.
Medvil-Davao, however, won the match over the weekend via a goal by Derrico Gabriel R. Diamante in the 70th minute.
Playing in what is considered as the Group of Death, Medvil-Davao needs to at least draw with Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog when they clash against each other at 4 p.m. today to secure a spot in the cross-over semi-finals.
Carreon will again rely on the services of team captain Jomar Acedo, David Angelo Diamante, Ed Merill Walohan, Francis Jay G. Abalunan, Frances Jay S. Abrasaldo, Imardino B. Polo, Khadaffy Biruar, Renz Rhey T. Napuran, Amani Manuel S. Aguinaldo, Michael Nehemiah T. Simms, Danilo Lascuna Jr., Jerard Biernaza, Michael Pantojan and Jestoni R. Felipe.
Medvil-Davao, managed by Rafael "Pops" Vilela and Erwin Protacio, is backed up by Penong's Barbecue and Grill, Coco's South Bistro, Cong. Isidro Ungab and Medvil Farms Inc.
Only the top two teams in the group will advance to the cross-over semi-finals.
In Group A, the Cebu Football Association led with six points followed by Iligan-Lanao FA in second with four points as of Monday.
