DUMAGUETE CITY - Rikko Cedric De Guzman delivered what it needed for Cebu in the 75th minute to beat North Cotabato, 1-0; while Baguio and Iligan-Lanao Del Norte stand to 1-all draw in their debut matches in the PFF -Suzuki U23 National Cup in Dumaguete City yesterday afternoon.
Earlier, Baguio seem headed for the victory after Audie Menzi hit on the direct free kick in the 55th minute but himself was pulled out from the game after sustaining foot injury after the go-ahead goal.
However, Iligan got a good game in the 87th minute after BJ Rojo responded with a header on a corner kick of his teammate that ended in a 1-all draw.
Today’s schedule matches will pit defending champion Negros Occidental against Zamboanga-Dipolog in the main game after Masbate-Davao tussle in the first game.
The two scheduled match started early to beat the no-light Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Stadium football field here with only nine teams joining after Laguna pulled out in the last minute for unknown reason.
Philippine Football Federation (PFF) committee tournament organizer, Cyril Dofitas, however said it will not affect the bracketing of teams but cannot confirm or deny if there is sanction to be imposed against Laguna prior to the deliberation of PFF. "We are still focused in the games here," he added
Nine teams were divided into two groups; Baguio, Iligan-Lanao, Cebu, North Cotabato and Iloilo in the first group; while Masbate Negros, Davao and Zamboanga-Dipolog in the second group.
The teams will play a single round robin in their group and the top two teams will advance to the crossover semifinals on May 25 to 28 and the top two teams will dispute the title and the losers for runner up honors.
Thistournament is supposed to be held in Cebu City, but due to reason known from the organizer, this was held here in Dumaguete City.
This tournament is also backed up by Suzuki Philippines through Suzuki General Manager on Automobile Sales and Marketing Division Shuzo Hoshikura.
This tournament also will form part of the players that will compose RP team to the Southeast Asian Games.*
