THE Medvil Football Club of Davao City opens its Group of Death campaign against Masbate at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, in the Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki Under-23 National Cup that formally opened at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City on Friday.
Medvil-Davao head coach Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said: "Nagtapok ang tanang kusog nga mga tims sa among grupo. Naa miy 50-50 chance kay group of death. Sigurado ko parehas ra among mga gibati sa ubang tims nga kauban sa among grupo (All strong teams are in our group. We have 50-50 chance to make it through since this is a group of death. I'm sure we share the same feelings with the other teams in our group)."
Also in the group are Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog and defending champion Ceres-Negros Occidental Football Association. The group stage is a single round-robin format where the top two teams in each group will play the cross-over semi-finals en-route to the championship round.
The multi-titled coach also said they haven't scouted the Masbate team although most of its players are varsity players in prestigious colleges and universities in Metro Manila.
"I can say Masbate players have skills and abilities knowing that they are also members of different varsity teams in the National Capital Region," Lalas said in the vernacular.
Lalas will rely on the services of goalkeeper Dominador Tato IV, team captain Jomar Acedo, brothers Derrico Gabriel and David Angelo Diamante, Ed Merill Walohan, Francis Jay G. Abalunan, Yoshiharu Koizumi, Frances Jay S. Abrasaldo, Imardino B. Polo, Khadaffy Biruar, Renz Rhey T. Napuran, Amani Manuel S. Aguinaldo, Michael Nehemiah T. Simms, Danilo Lascuna Jr., Jerard Biernaza, Michael Pantojan and Jestoni R. Felipe in the squad managed by Rafael "Pops" Vilela and Erwin Protacio.
Organizers, meanwhile, decided to put all teams from different clusters in one venue instead of doing separate regional finals.
The tournament also serves as a venue for national coaches to scout players for the Southeast Asian Games.
