Malditas drop heartbreaker to Thailand

The Philippine national women’s football team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to powerhouse Thailand in the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers Thursday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Thailand got the first blood of the match, with its player getting past the Malditas defense for a breakaway shot at the 37th minute which gave the Thais a 1-nil lead.
The Malditas kept the match close in the second half as they prevented Thailand from pulling away in the game.
The Filipinos then scored the equalizing goal at the 88th minute, but referees somehow ruled out the shot which allowed Thailand to come away with the victory.
With the loss, the Malditas, which came off a 6-0 triumph over Iran last Tuesday, slid to second place with three points to trail Thailand, which leads the group with six points.
The Filipinos will need to win convincingly in their next match against host Bangladesh and hope that Thailand lose to Iran on Saturday to get a shot of advancing to the next round.
Only the top team from the group will earn a ticket to the Asian Women’s Cup next year, which serves as a qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
