MANILA, Philippines – Despite a knee injury, Chieffy Caligdong came up with crucial goals to lead the Philippine Azkals to a 2-0 victory over Macau in the 2011 Long Teng Cup.
The Filipino winger, who sat out the first half due to his injury, struck his first goal in the 58th minute off a free kick by Mark Hartmann.
Caligdong slid in another goal in the 87th minute, again off a pass from Hartmann.
The Azkals had a lot of ball possessions in the first half, but just could not convert against Macau.
Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss later decided to let Caligdong play, and he nearly had goal early in the second half.
Caligdong almost pulled off a hat trick (3 goals in a game) in the first minute of the injury time, but missed on his attempt.
Caligdong, with 4 goals in the tournament, is in the running to be the top scorer in the tournament.
The victory was the first for the Azkals, who were held to successive draws by reigning Long Teng titlist Hong Kong and Chinese-Taipei.
If the Hong Kong versus Chinese Taipei match does not end in a tie, the Philippines will end up 2nd in the tournament.
