Star striker Phil Younghusband dropped three goals to help Loyola Meralco Sparks overcome an early blunder and demolish Nomads FC, 8-1, in the United Football League Cup Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Sparks committed a miscue at the beginning of the match, as a kick by Mickael Cardoso near the penalty box went to Loyola’s Chad Gould, whose deflection went straight to their own goal, giving Nomads a 1-0 edge at the eighth minute.
But Phil Younghusband quickly answered by burying a penalty kick in the 18th minute to score the equalizer. Phil then added another goal courtesy of an assist from his brother James to give Loyola a 2-1 lead.
Korean import Byeong Yeol Jeong also scored in the 40th minute to give the Sparks a 3-1 lead at the break.
Loyola opened the floodgates in the second half, as James Younghusband hit the net at the 49th minute, followed by Anto Gonzales’ goal in the 58th minute to lift Loyola to a commanding 5-1 lead.
Moments after, James freed himself from the Nomads defense and made his way near the goal. But instead of slotting the easy goal, he passed the ball to his brother Phil, who was trailing him and made the shot to bag a hat trick in the 70th minute.
Late substitute Jake Morallo then sank back-to-back goals in the 75th and the 80th minute to settle the final score for the Sparks.
With the victory, Loyola took the top spot in Group C with six points after having superior goal differential over Pachanga and Nomads, which also both have six points in three matches.
