Newcomer General Trias International FC made its surprising entry to the United Football Cup quarterfinals after eliminating Pasargad in a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at the University of Makati.
Song Ji Hun scored a header off a corner kick at the ninth minute to give General Trias an early 1-nil lead.
Needing a victory to advance to the quarterfinals, Pasargad became aggressive on the attack after that play, creating multiple goal chances. Iranian striker Masood Shahideh then finally hit the net at the 48th minute to tie the match early in the second half.
Pasargad then made good attempts late in the game, with shots at the 89th and the 92nd minute, which were all deflected by the General Trias defense.
The South Korea-bolstered General Trias, which even needed to go through the qualifiers to make it to the Cup proper, finished second in Group A with eight points to book a ticket to the knockout stages and face the winner of Group D which is still being disputed.
The draw also set up a classic quarterfinal clash between reigning League champion Global, which topped Group A with 10 points, and League runner-up Kaya, which finished second in Group B.
The UFL Cup quarterfinals will begin on November 6.
