Azkals "beat the clock " for flight to Middle East

Eric B. Apolonio, InterAksyon.com

The Philippine national men’s football team was set to fly to the Middle East tour on Sunday.
But the Azkals barely beat the clock for their 6:15 flight.
The team was supposed to be assembled at the Emirates check-in counter at 5:00 p.m., but only a handful of players, headed by coach Hans Michael Weiss and skipper Chieffy Caligdong, were there on time.
Other members of the team arrived just five minutes before the Emirates counter closed. Thankfully for the Azkals members, airline supervisors accommodated the late players.
The Azkals delegation was composed of 13 players — Caligdong, Marwin and Marvin Angeles, Ian Araneta, Misagh Bahadoran, Jeffrey Christaens, Jason De Jong, Nestor Margarse, Carli De Murga, OJ Porteria, Patrick Reichelt, Eduard Sacapano, Matthew Uy, and Dennis Wolf — and 10 officials led by Weiss. Azkals team manager Dan Palami was not with the team.
Weiss said Phil and James Younghusband, who are playing in the Singapore Cup with the Loyola Meralco Sparks, will join the team later. Other Azkals still with the Sparks are Ref Cuaresma and Anto Gonzales.
Also named to the team for the Azkals’ 10-day tour is Demitrius Omphroy, as well as foreign-based players Angel and Juani Guirado, Rob Gier, Denis Cagara, Ray Jonsson, Jerry Lucena, Roland Muller, and Paul Mulders.
The Filipinos will face Bahrain on October 12 in its capital Manama and Kuwait on October 16 in Kuwait City in their two-match training tour in the Middle East.

  1. What's Marvin doing there? He wasn't even named in the squad!

  2. Marvin might be a replacement for Omphroy who is in the hospital for some ailment. Omphroy did twitter that he will try to join the team in a few days so I don't think it was anything major.

As for why some players were late. A lot of the players were involved in games played in Laguna in the UFL Cup, so they had to rush to reach the airport.

    1. Replacement?!? LOL!! Marvin isn't even on the same level as his twin let alone Omphroy!!! And surprise surprise, he's a Global fuckin FC player!!

So I guess it's official... this team isn't really a national team! Players joining the team when they're not even part of the official roster... players getting called up when they can't even hit a barn door to save their life... important players being dropped for the smallest & dumbest of reasons... players who should be called up aren't even getting a look in... a manager running things like he owns it... wtf else is there?!? Pathetic!!!

I'd like to see a new coach brought in and just new management all together!!

    2. Weren't you a big proponent of the coach not too long ago? Before the Peace Cup I thought you were defending him.

    3. I don't know what or who you're you're talking about! Too many anonymous posters... don't know how, for the most part, you could tell who wrote which comment! lolz!

But just for the record, I think Weiss, too a certain extent does deserve to stay on as coach and I can see what he's trying to do/build (he even wants to stay on). However, overall, I'd rather see the back of him and more importantly, the back of the entire management! As someone before pointed out, the likes of Palami are the puppeteers, while Weiss is the puppets. However, more times than not, the puppet is more than happy to go along with the puppeteer. Therefore, there is a need to get rid of both!!!

    4. You are kind of easy to recognize from your speech pattern and opinions which you just stated above and which of course you are entitled to.

    1. marvin in manila. don't believe what you read. and he is better than you think. just needs more playing time at his natural position (attacking mid)

  4. let's give him a chance. although there are better players, marvin has always trained with the national team and there is also the issue of clubs releasing their players on the spot.
