Chieffy assumes leadership role for Azkals

WITH team skipper Aly Borromeo barred to play in the Philippine Azkals’ first game against the Kuwaitis, co-captain Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong has been tasked to assume the leadership role for the national football team.

National coach Hans Michael Weiss said Caligdong will take over Borromeo’s place after the Azkals’ skipper and Fil-German Stephan Schrock were meted a one-game suspension each after incurring two yellow cards in the nationals’ two-game series against Sri Lanka’s Brave Reds.

“I wish I could bring more local guys. But, when you go to a higher level (of competition), it is Chieffy who can rise to the occasion,” said Weiss

The Azkals clash with the Kuwaitis on July 23 at the Mohammad Al Hamad Stadium in Kuwait City, before going back to Manila to host the second match.

  1. You deserve it Chieffy. You were already there when the Azkals were still nobodies.

  2. Chieffy deserves the team captaincy and we as fans of the azkals will give him all our support.
During the interview of Coach Weiss after the home game against Sri-Langka I was surprised to know that the Coach was not aware of the rules regarding the cards. This is very important as 3 of our starters were issued a warning during the away game. The fouls committed by Borromeo and Stephan were unnecessary fouls and could have been avoided if the players were made aware of the rules.
I think there was a major oversight regarding this matter and may have serious consequences. Why was this matter not addressed during the managers meeting?
Hopefully in the future this can be avoided and the rules should be reviewed by the Coach as this is part of his responsibility.

Why does he deserve it? And what does "being there when they were still nobodies" have to do with anything??

    "Chieffy deserves the team captaincy..."

Again, why does he deserve it??

Caligdong is not captain material. Yes he's been a long servant in the national team but that doesn't really make you captain material let alone a "deserving" one. He's not the vocal type, it's usually him that has be led to be able make things tick in team.

  5. I can live with the decision that Chieffy is the capatin in abscence of Borromeo. Like the one above said he his not the "vocal" type...maybe somebody who screams on the pitch would have been better....but the coach will know it best. As for the yellow cards: The yellow of Schrock was needed like a hole in the head....it was quite unmastered. Esspecially he was one of the best players on the pitch and he will be really missed in Kuwait....in my opionion we don't have an equal player of his class for him on the bench or elsewhere to come from....also Borromeo is big loss especially with his physical presence....both are irreplaceable

I don't give a crap what the coach thinks. This is the same coach that prefers Mulders at LB instead of putting a RB in Schrock there instead. But that's my opinion though, strong opinion in fact and if you don't agree then fine, but tough luck as well, as that is my opinion. I will also say that I do like Weiss as the head coach of the national team, best coach we've in a very long time!

"Like the one above said he his not the "vocal" type...maybe somebody who screams on the pitch would have been better"

You don't have be screaming left right and center all the time to be considered for the captaincy. But you definitely have to be vocal to some extent. You need to lead by voice and by example, and that's just not him. He also just doesn't have that aura (if I could use that word here) where you would think, yes he looks like a good candidate for the captaincy.

  7. Action speak louder than words. Let Chieffy do his part on the pitch without the need for words as he had shown in the past. And I am very sure the rest of the Azkal team members have great respect for Chieffy and won't question the coach's decision. I have met Chieffy personally and he is just a simple fellow. But despite that, he has the heart of a fighter and demands a lot from himself on and off the pitch.

Anyway, we are just expressing diverse and legitimate opinions. What we have to hope for, though a long shot, is that we qualify to the 3rd round. Go Azkals!
