MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals have been drowning in media endorsements recently, but most of the media attention has gone either to the whole team or select Fil-foreign players.
But today, motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki is challenging that by getting the homegrown, hometown hero Azkals to be their latest endorsers.
Suzuki signed Azkals Ian Araneta, Yanick Tuazon, Chieffy Caligdong, Roel Gener, and Paolo Pascual to be their newest endorsers.
While it is normally a taboo issue in the local media to compare full Pinoy homegrown talent with the Fil-foreigners, a sponsor is now bringing it to light. The stars from Visayas and Mindanao were grateful for the recognition.
Co-captain Chieffy Caligdong stressed that their message to kids in the provinces who dream to be like them is to never give up.
“Kahit taga-Barotac [in Iloilo] ka or ibang bansa, hindi automatic na magaling at makakapasok ka sa Azkals. Wag ka lang susuko at patuloy lang ang pag-sakripisyo,” Caligdong said.
Striker Ian Araneta is happy too that they are being highlighted as homegrown Azkals, but says that it is not a big deal.
He adds that the important thing is that they are part of the team, and they do their best to fill their roles.
“Kahit maliit lang ang height namin ni Ian at Roel, hindi ibig sabihin maliit ang role namin, dahil malaki ang role namin sa team,” Caligdong said.
