Getting ready for their June 1 friendly game against Malaysia, the Philippine men’s football team Azkals will have a tune up match today, 4 p.m. in San Carlos City against the Under 22 national team.
Philippine Football Federation technical director for Visayas John Carmona, who was also tapped to coach the U22 national team, said it will be a good match-up as he is expecting the younger team to give their best against the Azkals.
The U22 squad has been training in San Carlos early this month in preparation for the AFC Championships Qualifier in Myanmar starting June 23.
Carmona said he was appointed as head coach of the team, with Tomasito Glenn Ramos and Dennis Peñalosa as his assistants, David Gerali as goalkeeper coach, Ripoll Sebastian as fitness trainer, Kristbert Lapurga as physiotherapist, Katy Liscano as coordinator and Dan Palami as manager.
Since the Azkals arrived in San Carlos last Monday, he said people had been flocking to the football pitch in the city to watch them practice.
“It is good for the city tourism program, as the city government has given its full support to the team,” Carmona said.
From San Carlos City, the Azkals will continue their training in Bacolod City and will play another series of tune up games this weekend at the Panaad football field.
The team is scheduled to play a friendly match in Malaysia on June 1, against Indonesia on June 5 in Manila, and against Guam on June 12 at the Panaad.
Among those who will play against the U22 team today will be Phil and James Younghusbands, Chieffy Caligdong, Angel Guirado, Eduard Sacapano, Carli de Murga, Ian Araneta, Dads Pasinabo, and Ruben Doctora.*NAB
