AFF U16: TOLA GUIDES CAMBODIA OVER PHILIPPINES

VIENTIANE (8 July 2011) – Cambodia claimed a hard-fought victory when they edged the Philippines 2-1 in the opening Group B match of the AFF Under-16 Championship at the National Sports Complex here this evening. Striker Nub Tola was in excellent form as he blasted both goals to deliver three important psychological points to his team in this tournament.

With a win in hand today, the pressure would have eased on Cambodia as they prepare to face the other rivals in the group – Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar.

The Philippines will now have to make amends in their remaining preliminary matches if they hope to advance to the next stage. Their hopes however suffered a crushing blow when striker Ryu Nell Fegidero was sent off in the dying minutes.

“The first half was better than the second after we took out the regulars. There are certain improvements which we need to work on especially in the passing and evading markers,” said Daisuke Yoshikoa, the chief coach for Cambodia.

“But winning is always good.”

It was a great start for Cambodia as they broke through after just seven minutes. The Filipinos were barely warmed up when Nub Tola blasted his side ahead. In one of their first moves forward, the Cambodians attacked from the right with Nub scoring off a header from Firo Fi In.

The Philippines were not affected by the early strike and launched right back into attack mode. Their efforts paid off within four minutes when Fegidero scambled in a close range shot.

Cambodia were soon ahead again, in the 20th minute. Nub proved to be the spoiler again with a well taken shot to provide his team a slim lead going into the break.

Nub proved to be a thorn in the Philippines side as he constantly took shots, including some superb long range strikes, in the last few minutes of the half. He had two clear misses, from the top of the box in the 31st minute and a header in 37th minute.

Cambodia, led by Nub and Firo, continued to pressure after the break. The Filipinos however were better armed and did well to keep the Cambodian strikers out.

Despite their untiring efforts, Philippines were unable to claim the equaliser. In the dying minutes, goal-scorer Fegidero picked up a second booking and was sent off.

  1. Cambodia lang hindi kayo mananalo. Yan ang resulta the way PFF handles the grassroots program, poor selection of coaches, poor selection of players added pa ang walang suporta. The technical people in PFF should all resign.

Alam naman nilang walang binatbat sa coaching si Glen Ramos (remember the u16 in Bacolod na palaging tinambakan ng mga kalaban 12-0, 8-0) and still they insist on him. Mahiya naman kayo technical people sa PFF. Puro na lang kayo seminars wala naman resulta. Hanap nang hanap ng paraan para maigasta ang pera. LMAO

  2. I agree with you LMAO. Dinagdag pa si Paolo Gabriel Alilam na hindi kasama sa Training Pool. Last minute addition siya sa team and then FIRST ELEVEN pa against Cambodia. Jackets wala din which is important before and after the game. Gears were issued a day before their departure. PFF could not even issue shoes to be used during training. Meron marami magaling sa training pool pero tinanggal ni Coach Glenn at pinalitan ni ALILAM. Super magaling siguro at FIRST ELEVEN PA against Cambodia. Whats really the connection behind this?

  3. Is this team the same age group that represented the 14 under last year, better yet, the same team we sent last year? Didn't we clobber Cambodia last year? Now, we lost? Poor Philippines, we are regressing instead of improving
We could only wonder why? PFF wake up, don't sleep on your responsibilities, if you can't handle it,then resign for the love of the sport! Being patriotic is the least you can do.

  4. It's true, the PFF really needs to improve on how they handle our national teams especially the younger ones because the grassroots program is what matters most. Yes, we can say that there are better players we can get, but the problem is that some players don't even want to try-out. PFF didn't help the U16 training camp at all. Imagine, the players were advised to use sleeping bags and buy their own water when they needed it, plus the players didn't have proper equipment, where's the help from PFF there. Regarding this Alilam guy, he was originally part of the final 30 for the training pool but he backed-out. A week or two before departure to Laos a defender from the final 20 backed-out. Alilam was the only player available that was part of the U14 team last year that's why he was chosen to complete the list.

  6. please do not blame the players.. it was coach glen's fault! imagine ipagsiksikan ang mga players sa 1 room.. kakain sa carinderia at 50 pesos per meal..walang tubig.. matutulog ng 11pm gigising ng 4am.. iyan ang buhay ng u16 sa kanya.. lahat ng players namayat! bagsak ang katawan.. kung di pa sa tulong ng mga parents.. kawawa ang team na yan!they gave a good fight sa LAOS. kung naalagaan ang team na yan hindi ganyan lang..ang ganda game nila againsy myanmarr and cambodia..FYI lang kahit singko walang natanggap ang mga bata na yan sa PFF!
