Suzuki Cup semis stint a "good achievement" for Azkals says Coach Weiss

Despite failing to qualify for the finals of the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, members of the Philippine national team can still hold their heads high, said coach Hans Michael Weiss.
The Azkals were hoping to surpass their Cinderella run to the semifinals two years ago, but fell short of that goal after losing to Singapore Wednesday.
“It was still a good achievement for us to reach the semifinals and hopefully we can learn from this and come back stronger in the future,” said Weiss.
The German coach, who had a word war with Lions coach Radojko Avramovic prior to the start of the series, had more gracious words for Singapore after the loss.
“Singapore’s extra portion of experience and coolness under pressure helped them today and overall, they are deserved winners over the two games,” Weiss said.
The Azkals will next compete in qualifiers for the 2014 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup, which the Philippines will host next March.
The Challenge Cup is a tournament for emerging football nations in Asia. The Azkals finished third in that competition earlier this year.

  1. I'm dissapointed that our team doesn't know how to defend 'set pieces' especially the quick ones knowing many of them played in Europe. Weiss should also be held responsible for the loss as the team always starts slow and will play catch up in the second half.

    1. the defending is good for me, our problem is offense, 2 games we can't even score.

    2. well, of course Singapore was a team which we could beat....but in the Semi's the Singapore team was the better side and deserved to win (to be fair)....maybe we played a bit too cautious (just not get a goal and then it is hard to shift gear into attack) Maybe next time it could be another result....but so is football....and overall we really can be satisfied with the Suzuki cup...I mean we proved that 2010 was no one night sensation and we made it to the semis again. This year we got 2 wins 1 draw and 2 defeats (last time 1/2/2)...so a bit better. We beat Vietnam again and finally Vietnam.....Singapore was close....so just keep on working....next challenge is the Challenge Cup which will be tough enough (Turkmenistan is damned hard to beat).

    4. we played Singapore 3 games prior to this one and it's only natural that they have adjusted and learnt of our strengths and weaknesses from those games and finally they were able to break the Azkals down. Almost paralleled with Pacman, coincidentally.

  2. Chris Greatwich should played cos he produced 2 goals 2 years ago compared to P. Younghusband this year.

    1. chris is midfielder and Phil is striker. cant have wrong pieces playing the wrong spot my fried. what we lacked throughout is the attacking mindset of the midfield coz when our strikers get the ball there's just no support as most of the midfielders seem to be sitting a bit too low. 2 strikers is simply not enough to break a back line, perhaps even a holding mid, and the keeper. In other words, we lacked in movement going forward forward as a team. individually, we have flanks charging with Patrick and James supplying out wide but that's really more like 50/50 chances compare to bringing up the ball methodically, with good movements, running the lanes, creating options and then chances. That's what we need to work on. And please stop the long balls and bring up the ball with accurate ground passing. Also, I don't know what they can do to improve their touches also. That one thing is a big reason why they cannot move forward quite fluidly.

  4. PFF needs to put a leash on Palami, I mean, Jees. Some kind of checks and balances there. Coach Weiss, you failed. Thank you, find some other team somewhere, and move on.
