The Philippine national men’s football team may have settled for a scoreless draw against Singapore Saturday night in the first leg of the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup semifinals, but coach Hans Michael Weiss isn’t complaining about the result.
Weiss said keeping Singapore scoreless was a good result for the Azkals, as away goals in the Suzuki Cup semifinals have more value than the home goals. That means that in case of a tied aggregate score after the second leg, the away goals will determine which team will advance to the final.
“People think that we have to win the match. It’s not the case,” Weiss said after the match.
“I was saying to the players and the management that a 0-0 result is a very good result for us. If we have a 1-1 or 2-2, they’re gonna go to the final.”
Given the scenario, Weiss said that the pressure is now on Singapore to go on the attack in the second leg of the semifinals, set on December 12 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
“Now, the ball is in Singapore. They have to do something. They have to be more active and that gives us chances for counterattack,” Weiss said.
Weiss is optimistic that a finals ticket is within reach fro the Azkals.
“We have all the possibility to be confident,” he said. “We now have to make the next step which is to reach the final.”
