PRISAA - Cebu City routs Dumaguete, 4-0

DESPITE practicing for only three days, the Cebu City football team showed it’s a cut above the competition and dominated the Private Schools Athletic Association and will represent the region in the national finals next year.

Cebu City finished unbeaten in the regional tournament, scoring another lopsided 4-0 rout over Dumaguete yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports field. Cebu beat Bohol, 11-0, last Friday.

“I was confident with the team because it was a selection of players,” Cebu City head coach Glenn Ramos told Sun.Star Cebu after the match. “The team was built up well. I can really say that the level of football in Cebu is high.”

Ramos’s team is made up of players from the University of Cebu, which won the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. title, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines and the University of San Carlos.

After a tightly contested first half, Cebu City sneaked in a goal before the halftime whistle after Junjun Pintuan hit the net during a mad scramble.

Aljohn Armamento scored a magnificent goal from 30 yards in the 62nd minute for a 2-0 lead and Jordy De Vela made it 3-0 in the 74th with a penalty. Juvan Torres closed the match with a strike in the 80th.

Unlike the Prisaa regional tournament, when Cebu City only had three days of practice, Ramos’s squad will start training at least a month before the national competition, which will be held in February.

“We will prepare well for the nationals so that we can pose a challenge to the top collegiate teams in Manila,” said Ramos.“By January, with the permission of the athletic directors and coaches, I hope there will be 100 percent attendance of the players in our practice.”
