AIRForce’s memorable stay in the top flight of the United Football League came to a sad end on Thursday night.
Lethargic in their last - and most important - game of the season, the Airmen failed to avoid direct relegation following a 6-0 loss at the hands of PSG at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig that put an end to the Division 1 stint of the most successful club in the country’s growing premier football league.
The loss was the 16th in 18 games for the former League and Cup champions, who finished the season with just six points.
“Sobrang sama ng season na ito para sa amin,” said a gloomy Airmen skipper Ian Araneta. “Hindi naman namin masisisi dahil kulang kami ng players at sa suporta.
“Pero nagpapasalamat pa rin ako sa mga kasama ko dahil nakita ko naman sa kanila na simula umpisa, laban pa rin naman sila,” the former national team mainstay added.
Drawing a brace from Kalilou Toure and Promise Jolomi, PSG ended the tournament in seventh place with 18 points to show.
The cellar-dwelling Airmen needed no less than a victory to move past fellow military club Army and boost their chances of staying in Division I.
It turned out, PSG was the one that came out with more passion and desire.
Toure opened the scoring 19 minutes into the game before duplicating his feat 20 minutes later.
Jolomi then came up with his own two-goal effort, the first two minutes before first-half stoppage time, and the second six minutes after the restart.
The Airmen’s woes were compounded when Randy Bela-Ong was sent off for picking up a red card.
PSG took advantage of the situation as Michael Nelson scored in the 69th minute, before skipper Hamed Hajimhedi joined the fray with his strike six minutes before injury time.
