Weiss rejoining Azkals soon

By

GERMAN coach Michael Weiss is nearing an agreement with the Philippine Football Federation to stay on at the helm of the men’s national team.
Azkals manager Dan Palami yesterday revealed that a deal is in place for Weiss to handle the team anew in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers in Manila in March.
Offered six more months to stay with the Azkals, Weiss has been deep in talks the past few days with PFF general secretary Ed Gastanes on the extension of his two-year contract, which expired Wednesday.
“We agreed in principle but there are some small details (that need to be sorted out) and sometimes they make a big difference,” Weiss told the Inquirer over the phone yesterday.
Palami said the deal for Weiss could extend up to next year if he steers the Azkals to the AFC Challenge Cup finals in the Maldives.
Weiss is hopeful that an agreement could be reached within the next few days as he tries to prepare the squad for the Challenge Cup.

    2. Lol. You've got a reasonable point. I think people are having way tooooooo much expectations at this point early. I like for Weiss to continue at least another year so that the PFF will have a year to find a replacement, if that's what they needed to do, instead of just couple of months before a big competition.

  2. Looks like we have no other option but to stick with Weiss. Like what the PFF president has stated before. Does he have the capacity to bring the National Team to the next level? I agree with the PFF president that we need someone to stir the NT to new heights . Having no previous experience coaching a senior NT was evident during the Susuzi Cup. It became a battle of tactics and we failed miserably. I also believe that we have decades to go before we can become possible contenders to even qualify in the final rounds of WC qualifications but this is irrelevant right now. The bottom line is that he had goals when he started to coach the NT and those goals weren't achieved. For that, no reason to give Weiss another extension.

  3. It may help the Azkals management to receive a good training program on "Succession Planning". This will help ensure the continuity of programs, goals and objectives despite the change of personnel in leadership and followers. This principle has been applied in governments, military organizations and of course, football teams. Look at Real Madrid, Barca and Manchester United. Ask how they were able to sustain the caliber of the clubhouse despite the decades of change.... Succession Planning may be one of the supporting answers.

  4. Succession planning is pie in the sky unless there's something solid preceding it.
This craving for international success ignores the reality - which developed Asian football nations accepted unquestioningly - that national nurture of the game had to take priority over any dreams of progress internationally.
Until that happens Filipinos based abroad with
average talent will continue the delusion of
    improvement.

    1. Fully agree! Finally someone sums up the problem in a nutshell. We need to develope our grass roots programm in order to not be dependant on filipinos who are based abroad and our clubs need to develope youth teams in order to spot and develope talented filipino players. This is the only way to achieve long term success. At the moment everyone just wants to get more fil players abroad but what is when we cant find anymore? People need to see reality for what it is and it will take a long time until we can have that long term success. We are still at the very start and need to build a foundation before we can tackle competitions like the AFC Cup.

  5. However alot more morons think the way to quick success is to get players aboard.
Keep telling them if these players from overseas can represent their own countries they will reject our approach.
All these moronic fans say its the pinoy spirit.
Pinoy spirit is a bullshit as this is their one shot of playing international football.
    Understand?

    1. It is rude to refer to posters as morons. Despite my law degree and 7 years of university, I don't understand your point. It is true that a Filipino who was born in Germany would likely prefer to play for Germany if they were selected. We all understand that. We also understand that a player from Germany or Spain could be a dominant player in the AFF even if they are not good enough to play for a top ranked national team.
Are you trying to suggest that players who are not picked for their home countries' national teams should not be picked for the Philippines because the Azkals are not their first choice? Or do you just not like the fact that foreign born players are admired and cheered?
So you ask "Understand?" My answer is "No". Your post made no sense.

      ??

the foreign born players cannot even stand up to the thais or singapore players on the field.
what you toking about being dominant?
Stick to your job being a lawyer and stop commenting shit on football.

  6. Football development in the Philippines is quite complex. Everyone understand that we need to improve our grassroots program in order to have a more sustainable success in international stage. However, that would only be possible if our senior team can bring immediate success in order to lure potential investors in helping out with the grassroots program. For now, the subject matter is clear and the subject matter is about the national coach and the performance of the national senior team. That being said, Coach Weiss had his chance to improve and influence the football system we have across all age groups but that did happen. It is not his job to do so but PFF should look for a senior NT coach that can help influence other local coaches in different levels the type of football system that we want to be identified with. Hence, we need to get a coach that would be able to adjust and make the transition from a national team coach to a technical director in order to solidify the football system in the Philippines.

    2. I don't think that Coach Weiss has had the oppurtunity or direction to participate in grassroots development. The MNT has been run as a Palami private club, not as part of an integrated national development program. The lack of involvement of the PFF has resulted in a big step forward for the MNT. It is not Coach's job to install a national Filipino playing style. His job is to win, using whatever tactics are appropriate for the players that are available to him. A national team coach should work with the age group national teams and their coaches so that the players are able to move up through the national team program. A technical director is generally responsible for the "big picture" of development of coaches and players at the youth levels. It is a big job and it is a separate responsibility from winning international matches with the MNT. Coach Weiss can only be judged on the results that he achieved with the MNT. I don't care if it is long ball or possession tactics as long as the tactics result in wins.
The trouble with a 6 month contract is that Coach Weiss might start looking for a new job during that time. If the PFF are going to wait until the AFC Challenge Cup, he might accept another position. The PFF would look ridiculous if they won the Cup and then he left the MNT.
