Philippine national men’s football team skipper Chieffy Caligdong will be staying in the Philippines to play football after all.
The Azkals hero, who earlier announced that he was considering migrating to the United States with his family, will be transferring to Green Archers United Globe in the United Football League after getting his discharge from Philippine Air Force last month.
“Green Archers FC and Globe Telecom have come to an agreement with Chieffy for him to play with our club starting with the PFF Smart Championships later this month,” said Green Archers manager Monchu Garcia, who added that the left winger will be formally join the squad during the UFL transfer window, which is set on January 21.
Caligdong will be joining a Green Archers squad that finished fourth in the recently-concluded United Football Cup.
Rumors about Caligdong’s transfer to Green Archers were rife last year after the player was signed to an endorsement deal by the telecommunications company as a sports ambassador. Globe is the main sponsor for Green Archers in the UFL.
Last June, Caligdong revealed plans to migrate to Texas where his wife, a registered nurse, received an employment offer.
But he also said he received offers from several clubs in Manila after announcing his departure from Air Force, where he served for almost a decade. Caligdong said that his decision of whether to remain in the country would depend on what is best for his family.
“Kung makaya ko yung pamilya ko na suportahan, mas maganda na sa Manila na lang kaysa magkahiwalay-hiwalay,” he said in an earlier interview. “Kung ano yung mas maganda na kumportable kami, mapagdesisyunan namin.”
Caligdong is set to make his debut with the Green Archers on January 12 against Mindanao-based club Romgarjal FC in the PFF-SMART National Club Championships in Dapitan City.
