Global sent packing as Ceres sustains amazing giant-killing run

By Karlo Sacamos

CERES reinforced its growing reputation as a giant killer when it toppled Global, 1-0, on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to advance to the semifinals of the Philippine Football Federation-Smart National Club Championship.
Less than a week after stunning United Football League Cup champion Stallion, the Negros Occidental-based squad caught a second big fish in Global, the reigning UFL League titlist which has several members of the Philippine Azkals in its roster.
“For me it’s all hard work, but there’s luck also. Stallion and Global are the top two teams in the UFL so it’s an unbelievable achievement for now,” Ceres manager and former national team member Ali Go said.
“We’ll keep on building our team and get better.”
Peter Long’s left-footed strike in the 12th minute proved enough for Ceres, whose defense helped the team hold on in the second half despite a more aggressive Global attack.
“It just comes to you quickly and you don’t think about it. You just have to bank that your teammates win it,” said the English striker, who has been in the country for less than a month.
Patrick Reichelt and Carli de Murga, who both accounted for goals in Global’s 2-1 victory over Nomads last week, could not reprise their roles this time as the Azkals mainstays failed to convert their chances in the second half.
