After the debacle in the previous Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Football Federation is bent on sending a better-equipped under-23 side in an attempt to come up with a podium finish in this year’s SEAG in Myanmar.
“The goal is already for the gold but to be realistic, considering that other teams have been preparing as well, this time a medal finish is something that the federation has set,” said PFF’s national teams committee head Dan Palami.
Two years ago, the PFF fielded a mix of local and Fil-foreign stalwarts but the Phl U-23 crew fell short of expectations and finished last in Group B, winning only one (2-1 over Laos) while yielding to Vietnam (1-3), Timor Leste (1-2), Myanmar (0-5), and Brunei (1-2).
For the 2013 SEAG, the PFF looks to start preparing the team by March, arranging a series of camps overseas before the Dec. 11-21 Games.
“We’re already preparing a training list for the U-23. In fact some of the players are already with the Azkals,” Palami said.
He was referring to twins Marwin and Marvin Angeles, Jeffrey Christiaens, Matthey Uy, Jason de Jong, Manny Ott and his brother Mike, their newest recruit. Neil Etheridge of Fulham, the first choice keeper of the Azkals, is still eligible to play in the SEAG, although his presence will depend on his club’s schedule.
These U-23 stalwarts are part of Azkals’ training pool for their campaign in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers on Mar. 22-26 at Rizal Memorial.
“These players will be training with the Azkals up to March and from March onwards, they will join the U-23 training team that will be augmented by other local players as well as those based abroad. We’re also setting up two to three training camps for them abroad,” said Palami.
The Phl has never won a medal in the men’s football competitions dating back to SEA Peninsular Games in 1959. The country has a bronze in women’s play in 1985.

Who is supposed to be the coach for this group. I hope not Weiss nor any of the local coaches -they've been there and failed. They released a statement before that they will get a different coach for the team - I hope this wasn't an empty promise by PFF!
ReplyDeletesayang yung previous coach na si Zoran. tsk tsk.
ReplyDeleteYou can bet your boots a U-23 medal will be harder to reach than last time. While the PFF has been pumping most of its cash into trying to improve an unimprovable senior NT other SEA FF's have given an equal share of resources to developing younger players.
ReplyDeleteThe scoreline between Philippines vs Laos was 3-2 if I'm not mistaken. OJ scored the first goal then Beloya added a brace including the winning goal in injury time.
ReplyDeleteA series of overseas camps? It must be nice for the U23 team to have so much money to spend. The Malditas are the best bet to earn a medal and they have to make do with scraps. Our bronze medal women's futsal team from 2007 raised their funds on their own.

Some Ideas for other players ?
why are you only listing half-filipinos ?
DeleteThen go ahead fucking list your own Pinoy "only" players. What the fuck is this another Pinoy, half-pinoy issue for you??? J fucking C give us all a break... Move on from this issue old fart.
DeleteIt might be too expensive if we were to call up all foreign based players. I think the local based players will represent the core of the team and just just few addition coming from Europe. Main question is, who will be the coach?
DeleteSome players on the squad are just from wishlist, aren't they? It wouldn't be late to put them on the squad at least after they show their slightest interest of playing for us.
DeleteAnd by the way, i don't think Jap-Fil players like Takahashi can play for us because Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship. Well, then some might wonder how Cagara and Lucena ended up playing for us when Denmark doesn't either, but Danish law just says "you can't voluntarily acquire another citizenship", which means that a case where the second citizenship was automatically acquired from birth regardless of the person's voluntariness could be an exception, and this was exactly the case for Cagara and Lucena. In Japan however, those who automatically got another citizenship from a non-Jap parent should choose one of the two citizenship before turning 22. Obviously different from Denmark. So this means, Takahashi might have already renounced Phil nationality, or if not, he should choose one soon and of course he will choose Japan.
Bakit si Japanese-Filipino Ryuya Ogawa ng Chunichi Dragons nakuha ng Philippine National Baseball Team? So possible na pwede maglaro si Yuji Takahashi sa Azkals.
DeletePalami the TWUNT talking about getting gold but instead says it's more "realistic" to get bronze this year.... how much more of a fucktard can he be?!?!
ReplyDeleteIt ain't happening this year and when they fail, he should be crucified outside the PFF building!!!!
