STALLION FC survived a resolute Green Archers United, 2-1, to move within striking distance of the lead in the United Football League on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Stallions leaned a late goal from Jordan Mintah to break a deadlock and overcome an Archers side that played with just 10 men most of the match.
As a result, the Stallions moved two spots up to second with 21 points after nine outings, ahead of Kaya FC and Loyola Meralco by three points, although having played one match more than the two perennial contenders.
The Archers, on the back foot since Herve Ebanda picked up two yellow cards in a span of five minutes early in the first half, were stuck in sixth spot with 11 points.
Pouncing on the departure of the Cameroonian defender, Shirmar Felongco struck for the Stallions a minute before first-half injury time when the University of Santo Tomas star scored past Paolo Pascual.
The Archers, though, didn’t go down without a fight as Jovanie Simpron provided the spark off the bench with the equalizing goal in the 83rd minute.
That, however, only set the stage for Mintah’s heroics as the Ghanaian striker found the back of the net two minutes into stoppage time.
Manila Jeepney finally registered in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Socceroo earlier.
Jeepney notched a first win in nine matches to move two spots up to seventh spot with five points, while keeping Socceroo second to last with just four points to show.
