Kaya FC pounced on a disjointed Philippine Army side as it breezed to a 9-1 victory on Thursday night in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
The third-running squad never looked back after erecting an early cushion against the Korean-powered Troopers en route to the blowout victory that enabled the title contender to keep in step with leaders Loyola and Global.
OJ Porteria notched a hat-trick, Kenshiro Daniels added a brace, while Chris Greatwich, Masa Omura, Emmanuel Mbata, and Jovin Bedic contributed a goal apiece for Kaya, which added to the misery of an Army team that suffered a third straight one-sided loss and fourth overall in seven games to stay in fifth spot.
“It’s good for our confidence to score this many goals,” Kaya coach David Perkovic said. “It’s gonna make a big factor towards the end of the season I would gather.”
In the quickest goal scored in the current league, Omura found the back of the net just 46 seconds into the game when he headed home a pass from Daniels to open the floodgates for Kaya.
After Greatwich scored inside the box in the sixth minute, Porteria slotted home two quick goals five minutes apart starting in the 10th, before Daniels found himself at the receiving end of a Porteria cross to score a header in the 29th that gave Kaya a commanding lead.
Porteria completed his three-goal effort four minutes after the restart, scoring from the penalty spot, before assisting on Daniels’ second goal eight minutes later.
Mbata and Bedic joined the scoring fray with similar close-range efforts in the 67th and 79thminute, respectively.
Ricardo Becite scored a looping consolation goal a minute before stoppage time for Troopers, whose development has been hampered by apparent communication difficulties between the Filipinos and the Koreans.
