  1. This is bad news. Fulham are in the top league of English football; Charlton are two divisions lower and fighting for promotion. This means if Neil is first choice 'keeper there he may have bigger problems being released for Azkal games.

  2. If the Philippines advances to the qualifying group stage, chances are Etheridge won't be available for that.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Etheridge will not be in Myanmar anyway, Manila Standard reported today that Gier , Etheridge and Chris Greatwich will not go to Myanmar.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I think that Etheridge was originally going to Myanmar, but the loan meant that he has to stay with the club.

Etheridge not being able to play in Myanmar is the worst news ever. Sacapano is not a very good keeper and I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. I hope Camcam grows up to be better than him.

  5. That are bad news that Etheridge won't play in the group stage (if we qualify for it). Our team has only a chance to get good results if we can gather all our top players (and some reinforcements) for the AFC Challenge cup qualifier.

  6. Again, this is why the national team needs a better backup. When Etheridge isn't available, someone will have to step in who has any sort of quality and size. Sacapano is not that player.

Therefore, for this year's SEA Games, they shouldn't bother using Etheridge anymore but rather use someone that could that they can give experience and who can fill in when Etheridge isn't available. I've said this before on here but it got shot down.

  7. Time to call up Roland Muller. Or Michael Falkesgaard to the team. Also Nick Rimando is still eligible for the Philippines as he has only played on friendlies for the US at the senior level. He is very good and has won the MLS cup with Real Salt Lake. Nick has played for the US youth teams though so he has to apply for a one time switch from FIFA. He is like 3rd or 4th on the goalie depth chart for the US and I am not sure he will switch if he is only a sub to Neil during WC qualifying.

  8. cjeagle.. some of friendly count as A match.

friendly gred A match - max 6 substitution ( world ranking point count)

i dont think rimando are available for Azkals.

  9. No one cares for what Neil wants? This is probably the biggest chance so far in his career, and if i were him and had to choose to play for the Azkals and getting a good opportunity to get a better gig, then my choice would be obvious, id pick the gig that would secure my future.

As for reserves on the national team. Camcam sucks donkey balls and is very very lucky to be with the team. Too bad Pascual didnt try out prior to the PFF submitted the papers to AFC or whatever. Pascual is far more better than Camcam. And as for Muller or Falkesgaard, you cant just clap your hands and suddenly theyre ready to play for the team. Paperwork takes time, and the players need to go to the Philippines to fix their passports. They cant do it themselves, and there of course the usual obstacle that comes to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Actually I read somewhere that maybe Muller has his passport already. Not confirmed though. However, he might not be on the list submitted by the PFF to the AFC.

As for Nick Rimando, as long as you have not played in a FIFA sanctioned tournament you are not cap tied. He has only been called up by the US on friendlies so far because of their depth in that position. It will take time for him to change affiliation with FIFA (1 or 2 months) and of course passport issues. Also, he might not want to switch.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So lets clear things up. First of all its hard in Germany to hold two different passports, but there are some loop holes in the system enabling people to hold a 2nd passport. There has been talk about Muller for years now, but he has never shown interest, or maybe he couldnt because of his contract. But now suddenly he got a Philippines passport?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Charlton signed him on an emergency loan due to their backups being out injured. Therefore he'll be on loan as a backup. Don't expect him to play much or play at all while on loan.

As for Muller, he has shown interest before. Tt's the lack of initiative from the PFF to help him sort out his passport and other documents. Now, however, it's unknown if they're still trying to get him because it seems they're keen on developing Camcam (even though he shouldn't be anywhere the national team right now) and they've discovered Falkesgaard and would rather have him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. here is what I read in a forum in www.pfsa.biz under roland muller. He seems to have shown interest in the past at the same time as Mark Drinkuth. We just never took him up on his offer.

Roland Mueller ( Bundesliga ) is ready to play for Azkals in future. PFSA Inc. received his passport related docu papers and forwarded to PFF NT office.

Roland would be ready to help Azkals soon and be part of the PFF NT training camp in may which was
mentioned as an idea of DFB in relation closer cooperation w/ PFF NT.
In which european city the traing camp will be hold is in question for now.

  14. CamCam should first be gaining experience in U-16 and U-19 competition and not be allowed on the seniors. Unfortunately the PFF decided that youth teams are not worth the effort and time. Maybe they should ask Coach Weiss the importance of U-17 competition in improving the depth of the senior team.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Paul Weilers word cant be taken seriously. This guy is even starting his own Azkals U20 over in Europe and telling players that the PFF is included, which is not true. He is also telling the players that if they wanna play for the Philippines, they would have to go through him. What a shame. I stopped reading Paul Weilers comments on his own website, and btw, most users there are created by Paul himself.

Camcam shouldnt be on the mens national team, he has nothing to do on the U19 team either. He did a terrible job for the U16 team, so go figure. There are a couple of other players on that squad in Japan who shouldnt be there also in terms of quality. I wonder what they see in Camcam. Height only?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ya it's shocking that Camcam continues to involved with the national team as if he's already a proven youngster. What's even more shocking is McMenemy gave him his debut during the Long Teng Cup!

    ReplyDelete
  17. it is bad news that etheridge cannot play in myanmar. but if he was really good and playing at a bigger club, we can't have him for the small tournaments anyway. let's deal with it. our backups need experience. im excited cuz the azkals will get a good test.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think it's high time to resurrect Michael Casas. Prior to Etheridge, Casas was a star in the National team being the youngest to suit up. He is only 24-25.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Although the Challenge Cup is a small tournament by international standards, it is huge for emerging football countries like us.
Also, our defence relies a lot on the keeper. It's not the best tactic, but it works for the Azkals.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Casas a star?? LOL!! No he wasn't! If he really was a "star" then he'd still be involved with the national team. He also had disciplinary issues.

I don't rate Sacapano but I'd rather we stick with him than recalling someone like Casas. I'd also rather recall Ref Cuaresma than bringing back Casas.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Is Casas playing football now ?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good question jonny. We don't even know if he's still active in football.

But it doesn't rally matter though. He's not involved with the national team now and hasn't been since 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Casas was the keeper of Azukals who played against the Azkals prior to Mongolia Leg 1 match.

  24. Ananyomous you are really an ananymous!
PFSA Inc. is more as only mr. weiler.. so the mesg above is true , that phil u20 team can go for tourney in europe.
.. and that PFSA has excellent contact to near every important NT player if u like or not .. and we stay in contact w/ mr. Weiss.. so what´s your problem?.. maybe found and own organization :) bytheway. about goalkeeper mr. Falksgaard: http://cebufa.org/forum/index.php?topic=425.msg5758#msg5758

    ReplyDelete
  25. PFSA... why do you call yourselves, "Philipine Football and SPORTS Association"? Why 'sports' when it seems like you're only in football?

People would respect your organization if you actually become officially recognized by the PFF. It's like you're trying too hard in football matters as if you're an actual footballing governing body in the country. Because of that you're perceived as being wannabes which include Mr. Weiler.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Funny... we (PFSA ) did help also other sports like baketball , badminton . many football clubs or football organizations includes also other sports ..like football club fc bayern munich..
which includes sports like chess , basketball, handball . www.fcbayern.telekom.de . So why we should not do it?

    ReplyDelete
  27. ^^Fair enough then. But why is your website only about football if you support and promote other sports?

What about the other part of what I said above... no comment on that?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wouldnt take too much notice of paul weiler and PFSA. They guys cant even step out of the shadows and show themselves. The current PFF ( I wonder why there were so "empowered" under Martinez? well, you know what they say about birds of the same feathers.) has disowned them so let them shout and make noise as much as they want. Whats worrying is that they are fooling a lot of potential youngsters abroad when they misrepresent themselves.

Anyway, back to Etheridge. I know it is a big deal as he is a key component of our defense. All of these suggestions about potential replacements are well and good. Mueller seems to be the most intriguing but until he shows up, what can we do? Same as any of the aspirants from abroad. The PFF has to sort that out and create a group to review AND process all these players. That way at least it will be official, organized and hopefully effective. This will weed out both these shadowy figures (you know who you are) and illegitimate players (we dont want to get penalized and embarrassed for fielding such animals). This group should have the capability to process passports and other govt certifications so that we can cover the legitimacy of these players. SBP knows a lot about the technicalities of this and since MVP has a stake in the football team why doesnt the PFF ask them for assistance in setting up a similar desk for the PFF? We just cant drop the ball on other players and successfully process others. there has to be a system in place. If there is one, how come PFF is silent on Mueller considering our goalkeeping problems? Again, integrity issues will crop up and the PFF has to get somebody with a respectable and honest track record to do this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Also, Ive heard so much about how lousy our keepers are. Ive tried to give an opinion that Etheridge is more of the exception rather than the rule. There is no way we can produce a keeper like that in the current system. so lets stop bashing Camcam and Sacapano for the lack of exposure or skill..Some are lobbying for Casas but I cant imagine he is the best keeper out there at the moment because if he was where the hell is he? Anyway, if they are serious about the football program, why dont they round up all these potential peter cech's and put them in training with the youth squads. Maybe some specialized training for goalkeeping skills..do something for heaven's sake. You have to have standards that way before they are elevated to a senior team call up, they dont have to deal with all the criticisms. If i were a keeper right now, I wouldnt read these blogs. Camcam must be asking what the hell he did wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If Camcam is reading these blogs and other sites and asks himself what he's done wrong... then he should be able to figure out that he hasn't proven himself yet and is one lucky ass bastard to be training week-in week-out with the national team as if it was his club team... a free ride, that's what it is.

On top of that, he's already made his full international debut at such as young age. So young that he's unofficially the Philippines' youngest ever debutant!

I also blame Caslib for his (continued) inclusion in the national team. It was him who lobbied for his inclusion. Since he's the PFF's technical director and former national coach, the coaching staff will take note of what he suggests and in this case, they went along with this idea of including a then 15 year old Camcam!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Most goaltenders don't reach their peak until their 30's. They usually develop late and need to accumulate years of experience before making the varsity team. You never see players that young in any men's team especially without the training you get in a professional club environment. Camcam should be learning his craft in the junior teams and preferably in a club or college somewhere and not on the men's national team where he will never see time in an actual competitive game. You need playing time to develop.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Again, that would be ideal if our players go thru this learning curve like other keepers in developed football programs. Even the top university teams here in Manila dont play more than 6-7 months in a year and the competition is inconsistent. You could say the only truly league environment would be the UAAP/NCAA tournaments but after that they play in smaller competitions throughout the year just to keep in shape. And these are teams that pay to be in tournaments, what more for those kids in colleges who hardly have enough budgets for uniforms and transportation? So if you want to put a system in place for the senior team ( a decent season long professional league), something similar has to be put up for the under 19's.

So Camcam is lucky to be there but dont tell me he is not gonna benefit from training with the Azkals. You can only grow if you are exposed to players better than you. The coaches (whether its Weiss or Caslib) selected him to be part of the pool and these guys are being paid because of their decision making. There has to be something they see day in day out with these players.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He would be better off playing in college where he will be playing everyday and learning how to read situations and react accordingly. This are stuff you learn only through playing.

Of course he would benefit somewhat from practice, but game day situations is a totally different animal. They get rusty sitting on the bench. Besides I don't really think he deserves to be with the senior national team at his age. He is taking developmental time from other potential keepers who are more experienced. He should be with the youth teams where he can practice and play.
Goalkeeping is a position best given to older more experienced players. You can even play in some national teams to your late 30's and sometimes 40's unlike the other positions on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think for goal keeping, age is incidental. Look at Etheridge. There are a lot of young keepers out there. Casillas wasnt even old enough to drive when he entered the Madrid first XI. Everybody wisens up when they hit the early 30's. Thats when you finally mature and can read the game better, know how to react. Unfortunately but that time also, your legs are not the same and youve lost your athleticism. Its the same with field players. But keepers are just not involved physically thats why they last longer so they end up playing to their 40's.

For Camcam he will still be getting the best training and competition when he is with the Azkals. He wont be able to find that kind of exposure elsewhere. At this point, I dont think there will be anybody out there good enough. Who else have they brought there aside from Sacapano?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Locally Pascual for one would have been a better choice. Of course ideally like I said, it is time to give Muller, and our other foreign based players a chance which I had advocated even before I found out that Neil won't be available. By increasing our depth at goalie, we wouldn't be so vulnerable to injuries and club duties.

BTW those young Goalie you mentioned have been playing professionally since they were 12 years old on a regular basis with youth teams before climbing the developmental ladder.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Believe me eagle, I know a thing or two about professional players in Europe and how they got to that level. I almost did a thesis on it if there was internet already at the time. Thats the whole reason we need to develop a strong league. Without the league, it makes no sense for anyone to continue playing from the youth level. PLaying with the Azkals is the closest he will ever get to what those other keepers we mentioned experienced. Maybe thats what Weiss is trying to do. He may only be there to soak up the experience not to play considering he has nothing else to do back here in the Phils since its one game (vs Mongolia). Maybe he wont make the the team to Myanmar. Or maybe we are just that thin in that position. Ive heard of the Cebuano Pascual but you have to think of what experience he has compared to Camcam who plays for Kaya. We should ask Weiss on that. Again age can be incidental. Etheridge has years of experience despite his age. Who can say for sure Camcam has less experience that Pascual in terms of playing against more competitive teams?

I was also reacting to your statement that goalkeepers tend to develop late. I am saying everybody develops late in terms of reading the game. Heck if I could read the game when I was 18 like I did when I was 30, i could have made the National Team (well maybe that would be wishful thinking but i am just trying to make a point). But keepers careers last longer than field players and thats because of the less physical demand on them. So good keepers become even better when they reach that age of 30 to 35. And if they keep fit, some keepers reach the 40's like van Der Sar (who after yesterday;s FA cup tie with Arsenal could last easily another year in the Premier League in my opinion). In contrast, field players rarely last past 35 at the highest level. Even by the time they are 31 or 32, you can only imagine how good they would be if they did not lose their pace. Anyway, i digress.

I think we are giving more than enough preference for foreign based players. I just think the PFF is not solid and consistent in that department of processing papers for these guys so maybe Mueller could have been given a chance. I heard someone say that all it it takes to be successful in life is you just need to show up 95% of the time. So if he is not around, we need to make do with what we have. Your advocacy in the use of fil foreigners is still essentially a short cut in terms of our total football development. I dont think we will see eye to eye on that point. I think the development of a strong league here will see less dependence on foreign based players in a few years. We will have more of these guys come home as sadly the truth is they are not going to be as successful abroad. Again Etheridge is the example here (the only example of any Filipino playing in a top division). We treat him as irreplaceable but he has been loaned out to Charlton where I am not sure he will get playing time even there. And considering Fullham also has a mini goalkeeping crisis as main Schwarzer back up Stockdale is injured. They still went with the 40 yr old Zuberbühler as support in this crucial stage of the Premiership. If players here start earning at least half of what PBA players earn, our NT will be in business.
