REAPING from the success of its previous tournament, the second staging of the Karika Cup is expected to get more numbers this time when it kicks off March 26 at the Melvin Jones football grounds.
Open to 12 years old and below, the event being hatched by the Baguio United Football Club is one-day mini tournament for kids under 12, under 10 and under 8, which is a recreational tournament and at the same time promote grassroots football in the city.
"With the positive feedback and success of the first Karika Cup last February 20, Baguio United is organizing another Karika Cup because of its value to grassroots development and providing kids with an avenue for fun and sports," said event organizer Homer Alinsug of the BUFC.
Alinsug added the tournament will now be a regular fixture in the BUFC calendar following the succes of its first tournament last February.
"We are planning to hold the Karika Cup every last Saturday of the month," added Alinsug with entry fee for participating teams at P200.
With the popularity of the Philippine Football squad, the sport is currently enjoying its resurgence here in the Summer Capital where the Azkals had their one week high altitude training as they prepare for their ADC qualifier against Mongolia in Ulan Bator next week.
Aside from the Karika Cup, the BUFC will also have an 11-a-side football festival with entry fee at P500 per team. Interested teams could an send an email to nestor_udan@yahoo.com.
The two tournaments will also be a pre-tournament of sorts for the upcoming Philex Pine Cup, one of the city's largest gathering of football squads from northern Luzon and even as far as Manila to be held from April 9-12.
Defending champion Philippine Navy is expected to once again return to defend their crown in the men's open while the 18 and under including the Ladies Open are also expected to draw several teams in the four day competition.
Also in the tournament is the 16 and under, 14 and under, 12 and under, 10 and under and 8 and under. (Roderick Osis)
