TWO United Football League heavyweights that went neck and neck for the same goal now tread different paths as they take on separate foes on Saturday night at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
After battling last Tuesday in a crucial game match that greatly affected the title race, Global FC and Loyola Meralco tangle with Pasargad and Green Archers United, respectively, this time with different mindsets.
League-leading Global, which moved on the verge of a second UFL crown in three years after nipping the Sparks, 2-1, seek to avoid any slip-up as it faces relegation-threatened Pasargad at 8:30 p.m.
“We play our way and we play to win every game,” said Global coach Leigh Manson, whose team (44 points in 18 games) is on the opposite end of Pasargad in the nine-team standings.
The second-running Sparks (39 points in 19 games), who severely hurt their title chances after the loss to Global, instead try to use the 6:15 match against the Archers as early preparation for their upcoming Singapore Cup campaign.
“We’ll continue to play the rest of the matches, maybe even better now that the stress is out,” Sparks coach Vince Santos said.
“And we owe that to Meralco fans to play our best and maybe it could help us build up for the competition coming in Singapore.”
The Sparks face an sixth-running Archers side that is hoping to solidifying its chances of qualifying to the UFL Super Cup after league play.
