No rest for Kaya FC on Labor Day as it tries to keep flickering UFL title hopes alive

By Karlo Sacamos
AS Loyola Meralco carried a one-goal lead against Global FC at halftime on Tuesday night, Kaya FC coach David Perkovic walked with prized Spanish striker Pablo Rodriguez out for a break.
“So far, so good,” the Australian mentor smiled as he chatted with Spin.ph at the Emperador Stadium.
But it turned out Perkovic didn’t get the result he wanted as Global ended up with a come-from-behind 2-1 win to move closer to the title, instead of the Sparks making the title race more interesting.
So there’s no vacation for Kaya on Labor Day as it tries to keep its flickering title hopes in the United Football League alive, facing defending champion Stallion FC on Thursday night.
Two days after Global FC tightened its grip of the top spot after frustrating the second-running Sparks, the third-running side hopes to stay alive in the title race as it takes on a dangerous Stallions side at 7:30 p.m.
Global has 44 points with six games remaining, while Kaya has 36 with seven games to go, leaving the latter with no control of its own destiny.
“Nothing changes in terms of the title chase,” Perkovic said on Wednesday. “As I said, the title is for Global’s to lose, not for us to win as we have to rely on results.”
Kaya is facing a Stallion side that it hasn’t beaten in the league, losing to the fourth-running side, 0-1, in the first round, before settling for a scoreless draw in the second round.
“It’s a very difficult game for us, so we have to be at our best,” said Perkovic, who is counting on a solid cast led by Rodriguez and Azkals OJ Porteria and Chris Greatwich.
They will be facing their fellow national team members in Ruben Doctora Jr. and Simone Rota, who banner the Stallions.
Already eliminated from the title race, seventh-running Philippine Army now tries to keep its chances of qualifying for the UFL Super Cup alive as it takes on Socceroo at 5:15 p.m.
Only the top six teams clinch berths to the season-ending tournament.
