JAKARTA - Hans Michael Weiss, the German coach of the U-23 team that stumbled to a last-place group finish in the 26th Southeast Asian Games football competition, apologized for the team's dismal campaign, but also stressed the need to prepare much earlier for the next SEAG in 2013.
"The boys gave their best, but it was not enough," Weiss said Monday night shortly after Brunei dealt the Philippines its fourth loss in Group B. "Again, I sit here with empty hands and want to apologize for this campaign. We cannot change it at this moment."
Despite landing in a relatively lighter group, the U-23 Azkals won only one of their five matches to finish at the bottom of their group with only three points. The team's lack of experience and cohesion, as well as a weak back line, were exposed in the tournament, and Weiss was the first one to admit it.
"We have to draw the right conclusions and prepare much, much better than we did this time, with a very clear focus on the physical," Weiss explained. "Because physically, we're not strong enough, especially against Myanmar. To speak nothing of Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore. Totally different. We're far away from that.
Myanmar, which finished second in Group B behind Vietnam, gave the Philippines its worst loss, a 5-0 spanking that officially booted the junior Azkals out of contention.
The pressure of performing well, Weiss surmised, could have also added to the boys' poor results. "They were overwhelmed having to carry the expectations of the country on their shoulders. I'm still behind the boys. I'm trying to do my best. I'm also very disappointed.
"I'm the one who will get the bad talk and the trash talk, and I am ready for that. But I don't know if (Carlo) Ancelotti or another manager could have done much, much better. I don't think so.
Assessing the Philippines' situation at the junior level, Weiss did not mince any words. "I think this is the level of the Philippines right now. We tried our best. It just wasn't good enough."
The last game against Brunei, which had only managed a single draw before facing the Philippines, clearly showed what Weiss meant. Despite controlling possession and having numerous scoring opportunities, the team lost 2-1, with goalkeeper Roland Muller fumbling the ball after a Brunei free kick which led to an easy score. That goal proved to be the game-winner as the Philippines failed to find the equalizer in the second half.
"I think this game (against Brunei) will reflect the whole misery of the tournament," Weiss said. "I think we played them well in the first half. We had chance after chance. We had 21 shots on goal. [Muller] made a crucial mistake. It's unfortunate that he dropped the ball after a very easy free kick. He should normally have saved that one.
"We must understand, as pitiful as it might be at this moment, we are not on this level now. I sent Jason De Jong to the back line. But why? It was clear. The other options are riskier. With our weak defense, it was a miracle they didn't score more goals. But we should have finished the game in the first half."

Hey Coach, I'm not gonna give you free pass for your stupidity. God help me if I were Dan Palami or the PFF. I would have sacked you right there during the first loss, without ceremony. You, and most others of your kind, overestimate yourself and underestimate the capabilities of the Filipino Youth.
ReplyDeleteI am on record on saying that I wasn't expecting much from our young U-23 squad because of our lack of preparation but given the 5 games played in our group, I was expecting an improvement from game to game from the 1st to the last game. But what actually happened, was after having a promising start against favored Vietnam, we somehow managed to get worse(I consider our win against Laos as lucky as we were getting outplayed and only managed to have 2 goals in the end) , even managing to be defeated by teams we have no business losing to. Our final game against Brunei, was especially disappointing, as we have beaten this team many times in the past, with just local players. Brunei don't have any reinforcements from abroad, are mush less experienced than our players, and did not have much preparation time either. They were hastily assembled after the FIFA ban on Brunei was lifted and were not part of an excellent grassroots development program like some of the other countries have done. You can't really blame our players, as they have more skill and experience than the players from Brunei, or some of the other teams in our group, so that leaves only one person to be held accountable for that loss, Coach Weiss. Plus he also has the distinction of being the first Philippine Coach to lose to Timor Leste. Congratulations Coach Weiss.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading Coach Weiss'es comments, I also would like to contrast that with what the coach of Laos said after his team lost to the Philippines 2-3:
“It is my duty as the chief coach of Laos to accept responsibility for the losses the team suffered. Afterall, I’m the one who chose the starting eleven,” lamented Hans Schaller.
“In Europe, there is a famous saying which goes something like, if the team wins; it is the players who were responsible. But if the team loses, then is the coach who is responsible.”
Unlike Coach Weiss, the Laos coach doesn't blame his players or the inadequacy of their program but took responsibility for the loss.
But beyond the SEA games, it is his body of work that should be evaluated as well. We are just as vulnerable to counterattacks from weaker teams from the very first game he coached against Mongolia as we did against Brunei. That is very telling and consistent.
it's completely out of control! you got players walking out, blown out scores, pathetic gutter philosophy leading up to the games, during the games, i mean, you can't be a national team coach like that. hell, a high school coach couldve done a much better job.
ReplyDelete"weak backline"...there is one player in the team who can contribute big, i think, in the backline that did not play and even not in the 20-man team. J. Barbaso of Global FC...the best defender that should have played in SEA GAMES...strong, fast, full of energy for 45 minutes...sitting on the bench... ????
ReplyDeleteThe secret of a successful coach is not just technical preparation. Personality and the ability to instil confidence in less talented players are vital ingredients. Herr Weiss's Teutonic thoroughness is probably a turn off for gentle Filipinos.
ReplyDeletelet weiss concentrate on the senior team. the u23 team should have a new coach... how about norman fegidero?
ReplyDeleteYou had a weak back line because you placed Hinrichsen, and sometimes Drinkuth, there despite the obvious disparity.
ReplyDeleteWeiss is worst football coach the Philippines ever had :D he lost to teams that pure locals in the past had easily drawn or won against (Timor Leste, Brunei, Myanmar, Mongolia etc.)
ReplyDeletewow you people are just unbelievable. Listen to yourselves voicing out your expertise in football. You Philippinos are sounding very ridiculous about your newly found sport. Winning in football does not happen overnight. Who do you fans think you are? Argentina? Germany? Brazil? Not even South Korean level yet. For crying out loud, you fans are putting too much expectation and pressure on to this young team. Listen, Philippines is just barely embracing football and just barely even noticing the sport and you expect your team to be a top contender. Give the world a break!!! Your team does not have a culture yet my Philippino friends. Look, either all of you are extremely knowledgeable about football, surprisingly have had no success in until recently, or just extremely egocentric. Let's be real once and for all. I will give you an analogy, your team is still a new born baby. Okay? It's a new team. I don't care if it was Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola who was managing your under 23 team and I bet my life, given the time they have spent together and preparation, that team would still finish either last or second to the last. Have you watched the games? The players on the field, how do you say, visibly were not "gellin". In football, no in a team sport in general, you have far greater success in having a new coach in a team were players have played together for some time than vice-versa. Sad truth is that your is the latter, clearly fragmented. They have not learned how to EFFECTIVELY play together just yet. This will take time. So yeah, I'm actually very surprise to find that there are actually many football experts in the Philippines and they just barely embracing the sport? You do the math... If you really know football, I would understand that you know better than to yap over the net, sounding very delusional, irrational, and just simply being egocentric... In fact, I would think that those guys who actually go out there and supported the team, the real football fans, the team's booster squad, I think they call themselves as Azkalros, I think they have the right to be more critical than most self-absorbed idiots here... For your part, I do not think you earned the right to be critical of the team since you have not invested much in the team and for the teams success at this point. Us here in Europe, we have been supporting our national team for many generations and that is why we become very critical and it's personal because we invested deep in our football program; it's part of our culture. You will get there someday, but not fair for your coach, manager, players, the team in general to be citicize heavily at this point. Just be rational and be patient; just as like the football itself...
ReplyDeletepeace,
from Germany
"Hey Coach, I'm not gonna give you free pass for your stupidity. God help me if I were Dan Palami or the PFF. I would have sacked you right there during the first loss, without ceremony. ReplyDeleteAnd you are overly dramatic!!! Get a grip kid!!
"Our final game against Brunei, was especially disappointing, as we have beaten this team many times in the past,"
ReplyDeleteYou're clearly not reading properly are you cj?!? Even if you're not try to at least think with a clear head!! Or at least try to!!
As Weiss said, which is also in the article, STOP COMPARING THE U-23's (or any other age group team) TO THE SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM!!!!
We have also never played Brunei at U-23 level prior to that 2-1 loss!!!! So I don't know what you're on about with this, "we beaten them many times in the past".
You and a lot of others are caught up being on your high horse that you end spouting out all kinds of shit!!
hey you from germany, it's either you've slept with Weiss or got in a three way with him and a german porn sausage. what's wrong with you?
ReplyDelete"hey you from germany, it's either you've slept with Weiss or got in a three way with him and a german porn sausage. what's wrong with you?"
ReplyDeleteShut up dude!! He actually speaks the truth, something which you and a lot of others can't even begin to fathom.
you shut up. fathom....you must have gone to college. is that why you can "fathom" the truth? ok college, whyn't you edit that long-ass yap of a crappy essay he just wrote, subtitle or decipher from it the "truth" for us. tell us what you can fathom, coz right now im beginning to think you are in his leather pants circle.
ReplyDeletehey guys. let us treat the guy from germany with respect. They are here to help us. regardless of our feelings about our current coach, he is right in saying that we still have a lot to learn, and any technical help they can give us will be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteNot too long ago(1991), they also sent us another coach(Krautzun), who was responsible for molding a local team to our highest finish in the SEA games(4th place) upsetting a lot of stronger teams along the way. Just because Coach Weiss could not live up to his predecessor, doesn't mean that we should suddenly disrespect the Germans and forget what they have done for us in the past.
As for criticizing our current coach, that is just part and parcel of being a football fan. A lot of us actually live in countries where football is more prominent and is part of their culture, so we feel obligated to express our opinions in the same way fans of those countries criticize the performance of their coach. If anything, from my personal experience, the criticism I have read in most Filipino football forums, is somewhat muted compared to fans from other countries.
There has been precedent before in another country that Germany has helped, sacking a coach provided by the Germans. Coach Nees was sacked by Rwanda after a disappointing performance in the African Cup of Nations. This hasn't stopped Rwanda from asking help from the Germans, with their youth teams, coaches training, their women's program and with their grassroots development program and football academy. However, at senior level they decided to hire their own choice, even recently hiring a Serbian coach for their team.
In the same way, I hope the Germans will continue to provide us technical help especially with our grassroots development program, coaches training, and youth teams, regardless of what eventually happens to Coach Weiss.
we have nothing against them germans. let's get another german coach then. that guy from germany's synopsis" about "Philippinos'" football is uncalled for, we don't need to get insulted like that. we are talking about weiss and weiss performed VERY badly.
ReplyDeleteFunny how anonymity brings out 'courage' from people. And please people, insulting the person doesnt make you right or make him wrong. If you dont agree to his opinion, then cite the points that you disagree with and back up your statement.
ReplyDeleteBack on the topic, Weiss and the team didnt perform well but given how little time they actually prepared for the tournament, it is to be expected. The players only playing with each other for a few weeks at most isnt enough to make a cohesive team.
I think the u-23 squad should be mainly homegrown players (NOTE: homegrown, im not basing it on how much filipino blood you have).
The reaction of some to that German contributor's comments would make you think he put the boot in.
ReplyDeleteNo, he only slapped you with a slipper and you should be grateful a non-Filipino spent the time to give you an honest opinion.
Punctured pride hurts - especially national pride - but there's nothing about the Philippines that gives it the right to think it can kick start football quicker than any other Asian nation. Without a miracle you'll all be white haired fanatics before you're even close to catching up with the ones who got the ball rolling earlier.
ReplyDeleteSi Anonymous (Nov.18 6:40 am) pa "what's wrong with you" pa. hahaha. e binasa mo ba ang commento mo'ng malaswa? lol.
Let's be part of the growth and development of this team and our football program sa bansa... Just keep supporting the Azkals through famine and feast. believe... :))
the thing is, what can weiss offer if he only played as a goalkeeper before? you better watch how he does a training session, kahit sinong coach dito matatawa dahil walang bago. even the players can attest to that.
ReplyDeletewe are not saying that we are EXPERTS here, we are just NOT STUPID to accept apologies that could have been addressed early on...
Weiss must learn to accept his FAULTS and not put the blame on others, come on, you are the coach, you called the shots and chose your players, so how can you say they are too young, things like this should have been said before we started losing. ang yabang mo pa magsabi na maguuwi kayo ng medal, come on, did you even ask your coaching staff about your opponents or even scouted the other teams?
If you really prepared well, we could have seen better movement in the pitch. Now tell us whats the real plan? How does your team operate?
We Filipinos are not stupid in football, we might be young, but definitely not stupid.
And don't blame the grassroots program or the lack of experience... you should have prepared your team to get more experience. Can you explain to us how on earth did they camp in Japan, a cold nation, then play in Indonesian heat? Oh well, in the end, you just can't give to the team, what you never had. Accept your faults, PERIOD! Suck it up man!
You actually cant blame on anyone, since the team has foreign-filis that made up the core in the team.its a young and raw but talented team, give em a few years and they be as good as they can get. The europe league kicks off season normally starts around end of july/August and the sea game are usually held towards year end and therefore those who are plying their skills in europe will likely unable to obtain early release from respective clubs which hamper early preparation for the team particpation in the sea game. unlike the neighboring countries, the core of the teams are made up of their local youths that had been formed from their grassroot programme as young as 13 0r 15 yrs old before being enlisted into the under-23. You defintely need to prepare the team early and when they still young. The lack of sufficinet time to prepare the team is the major factor which led to the dismal performance, and due to the europe season kick off league, weiss does not have the luxury of being able to have these players from europe so a to prepare the team early. he not entirely at fault , its still a good young team with potential and talents. better luck next time
ReplyDeleteYoung talented players sould be given oportunity to expose to the game. There are some young talents in this sea games,The malaysian team did just that by exposing their young talented defensive midfielder who is only 17 years of age. The last match against Brunei, it would had been a good oportunity to try out the unused and untest players in the reserves that are warming the bench. It will give em the opportunity to impress their skills.
ReplyDeletelet weiss concentrate on the senior team. the u23 team should have a new coach... how about norman fegidero?
ReplyDeleteagree with you, with fegidero's philosophy in training maybe fewer fil-for will be inlisted in the squad.....only those who are worth and ready for the challenges to be given by coach fegidero...........i like the idea and weiss will be the consultant.....and as an additional for the coach of under 23 would be fegidero let him decide what he will do and no one PFF will interven plus his assistance coach would be del rosario...this is a good tandem....after the under 23 graduated from the squad they will be introduce to senior team...
So what you're saying is that the competence of a coach depends on what position he played back then? So are you saying goalkeepers are not capable of coaching? Coaching ability does not depend on your playing position. It depends on your football knowledge, tactics, and how you manage people and I dont think there is any significant correlation between those and your playing position. If you want to critic Weiss's coaching ability, then please do so on valid and relevant points.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you insist on Feidero? He is very biased and will select players from the visayas only. The only job i woud give this guy is head janitorial positions. He sucks!
ReplyDeleteTo anonymous leather pants #4 that said: "O ngayun, what's wrong with you na? hindi ka man lang maka pag isip nang parang galing sa civilization.
Lol.
ReplyDelete"i love you, you love me, we're a happy family with a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, wont you say you live me too." o yan pre, masaya ka na?
ReplyDeleteBakla talaga o. Lol.
ReplyDeleteits will be a wise move to have another coach in charge of the junior rank like the under-23 and below. The grassroot programme is so vital as its where young talents are discovered as young as they are and groomed into matured players, It is also vital cos its a continuity process in producing future talents. With this effective grassroot programme, more young local talents in the country will rise up and present the country and it will ease the issues of just having to bank on the foreign baaed players who are unable to get early release from their professional clubs in europe. Instead made the locals as the core of the team in near future in such a tournament when its hard to get early release of the foreign based players from their clubs and it is much easier when a coach has the main core of the team togather daily present to geet the team prepared . of cos any players who are good enough should be considered iregards whether they are local or foriegn based. Its will be a good opportunity as well to expose the young local talents in such games like the sea games as a prepration for them to get the feel of it before they get to play in much bigger and important international stage such as the asian cup, olympics and world cup. The juniors will have to prove their worth before they get to be enlisted or promoted into the senior squad and by then they will have some playing caps under their belts and prepared when they are promoted into the senior squad.
ReplyDeleteThe blogger who mentioned that weiss was just a goalkeeper and how would he know bout outfield position players.. stand to be corrected... when Italy won the 1982 world cup. their manager was none other than their legend goalkeeper in the 70s ..DINO ZOFF. Jose Mourinho of real madrid and Wenger of arsenal has never played professional soccer but their knowledge and their succss in the games beat mnay who had been playing profesional soccer.. so is the presetn chelsea manager who neer played professional soccer in his life.
ReplyDeleteBREAKING NEWS: Coach Weiss recently announced that he will quit his coaching job and enter Philippine showbiz. Asked what area in showbiz he would get into he said: "I'm not zure, all areas maybe, I can adzjust, be flexible. Maybe drama, aczhun, muzical, I can mix it up. But i zhink comedy iz ze bezt for me, lol, he-he-he..."
ReplyDeleteVietnam is a good example how effectively the grassroot programme worked. Mind you even after this set of their under-23 graduated and overaged and unble to play in the next sea game, apparently they had already started to prepare the next team even before this sea game started from their grassroot programme!!!! See how efficient and effective their grassroot programme works. Thailand is doing likewise, everyone is prepargin the next team for the next sea game by at least drafting out plans and had scouted players to be drafted in for the next sea game. A plan that focus at least of two consecutive sea games which means 4 to 5 years ahead planning of drafting talented young boys into their grassroot programme as young as they are. Malaysia cater their young talents into one school sport of excellence and its in bukit jali i think, where the venue of the 1999 british commonwealth games were held there, Now the british commonwealth games is the second biggest sports event after the olympics which consist of bout 70s over british colony countries. therefore their stadium of track and field and indoor stadiums are of world international class. Singapore and indonesia are doing the same as they pay special attentions in the young and upcoming talents in their countries, Sports is one of the ambassador for the country and it promotes friendship goodwill and tourism as well and thats is why countries like them pay serious attention to sports and sports development in the country. lastly their govenments funded most of the sports and programmes which means lots investing of $$$$$$$$ just to produce winners and world class sportsmen and women for the country.
ReplyDeletewhere is PFF grassroots system wise anyway? is there a PFF website we could all pound our drums at? there's talks that PFF's Araneta has his own computer software something company. somebody in that organization might know how to create a website, a blogsite like this one here. it's been a year now. maybe the LA galaxy v. Azkals match a PFF genius that points to grassroots program, eh?
ReplyDeleteThe latest news on the 1st semi final match between Myammar and malaysia. with the malaysian team won 1-0. the second match will begins shortly between host Indonesia and Vietnam
ReplyDelete@ clockworks. check fegidero's track record first before you say stupid stuffs. why do you think negros became suzuki cup u23 champion? and why pachanga, a ufl newcomer, top their "group of death"? as a player and as a coach, fegidero is legendary... those in the pff and inside the football circle know that.. sadly you're standing outside the circle
ReplyDeleteThe trouble with @ Clockworks is he has a cuckoo clock with a speech impediment. The little bird regularly pops out and says Fuck-yoo instead of Cuck-oo.
ReplyDeletethe semi final match between burma and malaysia, with the malaysian scoring the solitary goal in the 85 mins, That match belongs to the malaysia team,They controlled the game and had more possesion of the ball than the burmese, The malaysia play good neat passing football, What is more interesting is that both the teams does not have foreign players except their own local players in the team. The burmese played well too, Tough luck they lost, a narrow win for the malaysia.
ReplyDeleteRe Malaysia vs. Burma --- exactly my point. thank you.

Jose Mourinho is an example of a crappy player (he didn't even make it at youth level) becoming a great coach, though I'm not saying this to defend Weiss. I'm actually surprised our senior team coach is coaching our U23. It's pretty much a standard for most FAs to have different coaching staffs for different teams (U23, U21, U18...), even Weiss was just a Rwanda U21(?) coach before coming here. That should have served as a hint to our officials. So the way forward shold involve having a different coaching staff for our different national teams.
ReplyDeleteI guess our U23's shambolic defending was to be expected. Compared to the McNemeny era, Weiss' defending tactics has lead to our backline being porous. And amplified by our U23's lack of CB options and players being played out of position to compensate for it, it was going to be hard to keep any clean sheets. Didn't we concede at least 2 goals per match at SEAG?
I have to concede though the HMW has brought in a shorter passing mentality that's less reliant on set pieces but this could be due to the influx of better foreign talent which Simon never got the chance to fiddle with (Schrock, Mulders, Lucena, Guirado, etc.). All he had for a midfield back then was JYH, Caligdong, CGW, De Jong... so I can understand Simon's reliance on long balls and set pieces. (FYI: CGW's equalizing goal vs Singapore was from a free kick).
But the Weiss reign is starting to become a wasted opportunity. Philippine football is close to approaching what I would call a modern day golden age (yes, at our current level, this is as good as it gets, no delusions of WC, AFC Cups or even Challenge Cup or AFF Cup glory), with the combination of the capability to attract decent european-based talent, an emerging local football scene and mainstream attention. The frailty of his defensive strategy are eroding whatever reputation we've earned in the AFF Suzuki Cup when our offense wasn't pretty but we were hard to beat (ask Indonesia how they only managed 1-0 wins in both home legs in the semis). So, he better start adjusting his strategy and selections (though playing 4-5-1 at Kuwait, he brought with him 3 STRIKERS on the bench) or we better just terminae his contract by "mutual agreement" because he is merely wasting time, money and momentum.
Well said, sir, but it's German money that keeps Weiss's show on the road and if he goes without resigning the money might join him.
ReplyDelete
