  10. Vietnam just was the better team. Outstanding team play and passing by their team, exploiting the weakness on the right side, only to be let down time and time again by lack of finishing on their part and by outstanding goalkeeping by Muller. The Philippine should have made some adjustments on that side though but clearly Vietnam deserved the win.

  11. What happened? They're nowhere near as good as a bunch of people (so called fans) made them out to be!

If that performance is anything to go by, there's no way they're gonna get out of the group let alone win a medal! lol!!!

  12. This game showed the difference between learner players and well trained ones. Hitting and hoping can never work against quality opposition.

Any footballer wishing to improve should watch a replay but try not to watch the man with the ball. Concentrate instead on Vietnam's forward movement OFF the ball. That's what made it such an easy win.

  13. so slow the Philippine players...1st half...Phils. versus Vietnam(SUZUKI CUP)...2nd half...Barcelona versus Manchester(Championship game UEFA Champions League)...our defense so slow to react.72% : 28% possesion...how can we win?

  14. good comment from anonymous 12.23pm. vietnam was superb with playing OFF the ball. they were not shaky in defense, neither in midfield nor in the attack. they kept their position well - moving superbly around the ball. this is one good thing the u23 and PH football can learn from. every good team in the world is already adapting this game. look at spain, netherlands, germany in particular. before it was the triangle pass, now u can see an "asterisk" of passing areas. our defense was ok, except for the misfortunes (hartmann, the CB at that!), the cool nutmeg goal past 2 azkals and again CB hartmann beaten on 1v1 situation.) we lacked quality in communication, agility, speed, needless to say tactical know-how.

  15. Good game today...I'm a Vietnamese fan, but i hope to see soccer improvement from all Asean countries. I think VN is in better form today since we have a very good preparation for the game. The quality of finishing is just aweful, but these are very young boys. They'll get better. BTW, you have a very good Goalie on your team. It's only game 1 and there's a lot of football left to play. Goodluck the rest of the way!

  16. vietnam grassroots program paying dividends, is all. the junior azkals were weed mowed down by a well-oil, upgraded, top form, vietnamese football machine. they all looked young and very strong! right. let's hope for a renewed fighting form next game(s)

  17. Thanks for the kind words, Mr VN fan.
It's hard to believe there are even better SEA teams in Jakarta so I think you'll be going all the way.

  18. anyways, i finally got back to the thread as I had to go to sleep and then to work afterwards so I haven't had a chance to post my thoughts.

First of all, I wasn't expecting much from this game because of our lack of preparation against a team that was a favorite in our group and was the runner up in the previous edition of the SEA games. I have been following the Vietnamese U-23 team in their preparation for this tournament and I was impressed by the results they were getting. Aside from the fact that a lot of them have had a chance to know each other from their time in the Olympic qualifiers a few months ago, they have also participated in a couple of minitournaments playing strong international sides from the middle east, central asia as well as our SEA neighbors. They have had some impressive results including a 5-0 win over the Myanmar U-23 team which we will be facing next week.

Inspite of all that, we gave them a scare in the first half managing a 1-0 lead, against the run of play. Their coach however made the proper adjustments after the break exploiting the weakness on our left side, and we did not and we soon fell apart after that. We couldn't keep the ball and they keep taking taking advantage of our offside trap(either through our own fault as well as some spotty officiating by the linesman) to initiate numerous attacks that were leading to one on one chances that forced our goalkeeper to make the save over and over again. They pretty much dominated every aspect of the game except for goaltending, impressing not only with their ability to keep the ball, speed and passing ability but also in their off the ball movement which clearly showed their experience and maturity as professional footballers.

As has been pointed out, this could have been a massacre and if it weren't for our outstanding goalie Muller, we might be making sober postmortems right now, that this team is not any different from previous editions in past SEA games when we were being similarly outscored by big margins. But the good thing is they still have 4 games to play and we have already played the best team in our group, a group that in paper we should be competitive with. I expect our team to rebound from this loss and hopefully make the semifinals. Anything less would be a disappointment.

N.B. I would like to note that if Roland Muller continues to play like this, Neil is going to have competition for the no. 1 spot in the men's team, which is good for us, as competition prevents complacency and will bring out the best in our goalkeepers.

  19. Hey guys! What are you talking about? The real score is 2-2!!! Phil and Vietnam made 2 goals each. Right, Darren?

  20. Azkal in Jakarta4 November 2011 at 01:55

@cjeagle very good observation, I very much agree with everything you said.

Vietnam's football program is a decade ahead of our current program, we should be patient and build on this experience to improve and support our football program.

Its a decent result given the preparation that the Jr. Azkals had.

Let's fight on we can still do it. WE BELIEVE!!!

  23. t's just the first game guys. Dont worry to much. Most of these foreign based players are still experiencing jet lag. PFF should also stop the habit of preparing so late (barely 1 month) and flying in and out of the country so close to the tournament. It will surely zap the energy of the players. They could have gone to Indonesia directly. Those flight time could have been used to acclimatized and get plenty of rest. Same scenario as the Philippines Vs Singapore friendly.

It was kind of expected, given the lack of preparation. As the tournament goes on, they will find their rhythm and cohesion. Good example: Team Soceroo and Malaysia. Who would have thought Socerroo will qualify for the KO stage after being dismantled 15-1 by Loyola Meralco. Malaysia became the Champion last AFF Suzuki cup after being humiliated by Indonesia 7-0 in their first game of the group stage. Sweet revenge against Indonesia in the finals.

It's a good thing, Timor Leste is our next assignment before facing Laos & Myanmar. We use it to reorganize our defense and offense, recharge our confidence and establish better cohesion among our players.
