Tweet MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The Philippine Under-23 football team lost their first game in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, falling to Vietnam, 1-3, Thursday night.

The junior Azkals had the lead in the first half, after Manny Ott struck in the 37th minute.

But the team's defense broke down in the 2nd half, with Matthew Hartmann's own goal in the 57th minute allowing Vietnam to equalize.

Vietnam struck again in the 72nd minute and again in the 91st minute (injury time).

Vietnam enjoyed 71% of the ball possession over the junior Azkals, but goalkeeper Roland Mueller prevented a blowout loss by saving numerous goal attempts made by the Vietnamese.

Ott, the lone goalscorer for Azkals, almost did not join the team. He only decided a couple of days before the competition that he will go to Indonesia.

It was the first meeting between the two squads since the Azkals shocked Vietnam in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, 2-0.

Vietnam, ranked 134th by FIFA, won the silver medal in the previous SEA Games.

  1. Problems of our Philippine U23 team: 1.Impatient; 2. Lack of team passing; 3. Rely on individual skills; 4. Slow to react and move; 5. No 1-2 play; 6.Rely on pure "LUCK".

  4. It's just the first game guys. Dont worry to much. Most of these foreign based players are still experiencing jet lag. PFF should also stop the habit of preparing so late (barely 1 month) and flying in and out of the country so close to the tournament. It will surely zap the energy of the players. They could have gone to Indonesia directly. Those flight time could have been used to acclimatized and get plenty of rest. Same scenario as the Philippines Vs Singapore friendly.

  5. ^Jet lag?! Were Manny Ott and Roland Muller having jet lag too? But yeah you're right, more preparation should be done on the team, maybe the U23 should have another coach.

  6. Crabs, hold your horses. It's just the first game and it was kind of expected. As the tournament goes on, they will find their rhythm and cohesion. Good example: Team Soceroo and Malaysia. Who would have thought Socerroo will qualify for the KO stage after being dismantled 15-1 by Loyola Meralco. Malaysia became the Champion last AFF Suzuki cup after being humiliated by Indonesia 7-0 in their first game of the group stage. Sweet revenge against Indonesia in the finals.

    - Everybody is subject to stress, fatigue and jet lag. I agree with you, we need another coach for U23. Weiss can't do it all. You can't juggle two coaching jobs at the same time and PFF should realize that. Dapat undivided attention para good ang results. Only in the Philippines yata na ang coach ay nghandle ng seniors and U23 at the same time.

  8. Pero Advisable siguro na the U23 coach has almost same coaching style and philosophy with the Seniors coach para smooth ang transition from players from U23 to the Senior side and vice versa.

  9. Actually it is quite common for a national team coach to coach the senior side and the U23 team. Coaching a professional club is a full time job. Coaching a national team that plays 2 or 3 tournaments a year leaves plenty of time to coach another team. If we demand that Europe based players take a month off from their clubs in mid season we will not get any good Europe based players. They have to earn a living and the training, facilities, and competition are better in Europe. We should want them to spend as much time as they can playing and training at a higher level in Europe. Some practice and adjustment time is necessary for a national team match but lets not forget that some Azkals and Malditas play for club teams that are much better than the national team. It was a good result to keep the goal difference down.

  10. ^^You're right we cant expect our foreign based players to practice with us for the whole month because of club commitments, but at least a week before the competition might just be OK. Jet lag , fatigue and cohesiveness will always be a factor if foreign players fly in from Europe just a day before the match. It's a balancing act for PFF and the players, but at least we should find ways now that we learned our lesson that we can't get good result if we continue this kind of practice.

  12. although they lost..
    atleast they scored first^^
I want to give credit to three players only..
Manny Ott, Roland Muller, and Jacques Van Bossche ^^
they played superbly even though they are experiencing jetlag..
It is true that some azkals are impatient and solely relying on individuality..
they lack a little bit of teamwork and it need to be improved

I'm highly postive that we can reach semis^^
    just be patient guys..

    GO!GO! philippines.. ^^
