Timor Leste stuns Philippine U23 Azkals

The Philippines absorbed a stunning 1-2 defeat to Timor Leste Monday, dimming its chances of advancing to the semifinals of the men’s football competition of the 26th Southeast Asian Games at the Lebak Bulus Stadium in Jakarta.

It was the second straight loss for the Under-23 Azkals, who also lost to Vietnam, 1-3, and now find themselves virtually out of medal contention in only the country’s second appearance in the competition in six years.

Timor found themselves in an unlikely position as the top team in Group B with six points, followed by Vietnam and Myanmar with four points each. Brunei and Laos, which both dropped their opening-day matches, were to play Tuesday night.

The result counts as an upset as no Timorese side had defeated a Philippine squad in four matches at the senior level.

The SEA Games is played at the Under-23 level and Timor Leste, facing the Azkals for the first time, had shown its quality in the 2-1 victory over Brunei over the weekend. The Azkals, on the other hand, had struggled to find their attacking rhythm against Vietnam.

Picking up from where they left off in the victory against Brunei, the Timorese, who lost all four games in their debut in SEA Games football two years ago in Laos, took the lead in the 17th minute with Murilo Rebeira scoring on a tap in after a break down on the Azkals defense left side.

Timing his run well and clinical with his finish, OJ Porteria equalized in the 37th minute, latching unto a cross from Patrick Hinrichsen from the left for 1-1 at halftime.

Quick on the counter attack, the Timorese got off to a fiery start in the second half with Diogo Santos restoring the lead by beating Hinrichsen on the left flank and shooting past Roland Muller in the 48th minute.

The Azkals improved in the later stages, attacking with more purpose with Jason De Jong and Manny Ott getting into dangerous areas and Carli de Murga also forcing a fine save from Emerson Carlos with his left-footed strike in the 75th minute.

But Timor still had the better chances with Antonio Marcus’ header just denied by the crossbar off a corner kick and Porteria also needing to make a goal line clearance on a Murillo shot from point-blank range in the 54th minute.

The Azkals made two changes to the side that lost to Vietnam with coach Hans Michael Weiss, who had rued that jetlag had bothered some of his players from Europe, sending in Gerardo Valmayor for Joshua Beloya and Hinrichsen replacing Neckson Leonora at leftback.

Valmayor, the UAAP rookie of the year, who helped University of the Philippines to the title early this year, had a long range effort from outside the box saved late in the second half when the Azkals pushed forward.

The Azkals hope to end their winless slump when they face Laos on Friday also at the Lebak Bulus Stadium.

  1. Hey guys. Just wondering. A few months ago, there was an under-23 national football tournament (Suzuki I think). We saw Ilo-ilo and Bacolod coming out the best teams along with other provincial teams along with NCR. I saw in the different press releases that the U-23 national team would be fielded based on this tournament. Why is it that I see none of the best players from that tournament in the starting 11? I saw many of those players play very good football, I think even better than many of the present starting 11 against Timor. Why?

  7. ^^ In fairness to the fil-for players, they contributed a lot to the team. What can you say about the contribution of Muller, De Murga, Christeans, De Jong, Ott, Porteria to the team? Who would you put in there to fill those positions? Man, I'm with you that Barbaso should have been there but to diss the fil-for players who made sacrifices also is just disgusting.

I wont be shocked if Timor Leste would win against Myanmar and Laos. They also have quality timor-foreign players based in Portugal & Australia. Their forward and winger were tall and skillful.

  8. When they subbed those useless HARTMANs, naging okay ung laro. Those fil-foreign players are good. HARTMANs lang ang indi! hahaha

  9. Can you lot get over this "useless Hartmann this, crap Hartmann that" attitude already?!?! It's disgusting and it's getting old and boring!!

What about Valmayor? Leonora? or even Beloya?? They were completely anonymous in the Vietnam and Timor-Leste matches respectively!! Yet you people don't seem to be giving them any stick!!! That right there is just BS!! It proves that you like to single out certain players because of beef you have with another issue..... and that issue seems to be the "foreign born vs locals" debate.

As the one poster above has said, who would people put ahead of most of these foreign born players? And just because there was a national U-23 tournament doesn't mean that those players would be good enough for the national U-23 team ahead of the foreign born players! This is also since Palami has gone out and said that they aim to bring home a medal!

"hose fil-foreign players are good. HARTMANs"

Umm.... right.... Mark Hartmann was banging the goals in even last season in the ufl. He's continued his form this season so far!

And Matt? Remove your tinted glasses and have a proper look.... Matt has been playing out of position at CB!! As I've said somewhere else, try putting your idol Caligdong at CB and see if he doesn't play like shit!

  10. To all the poster above saying that "PA POGI LANG ALAM NILA GAWIN" sino bang pogi sa kanila? Kung matagal na kayo sa futbol di nyo tinitingnan yung itchura but instead you watch the game.

  11. STILL, the HARTMANs are useless! ahaha!

  12. always this offending vs. the fil foreign players. if all goes well "...oh, great performance..." etc. if they lose "....why fil for players, why not fill in with local talents...". this pisses me really off. they are all filipinos. wherr would you think would our senior team be without them? field local players and you see how they will be clean swept from the field from every Asian team. the only exceptional local born player is Chieffy who has exceptional skill and international format....the rest? ....needs still a lot to work and practise.

  17. Agree with "sandugo". Give the locals a long preparation for such a tournament to have a solid team, just like other countries are doing.
