Manila Jeepney earns first trip to UFL top flight following loss of Airmen

By Karlo Sacamos

MANILA Jeepney didn’t have to break a sweat to officially get promoted to Division 1 of the United Football League.
Philippine Air Force lost to Manila All-Japan, 1-2, in Division 2 play on Sunday night at the Emperador Stadium in a setback that assured the Jeepney an outright promotion.
The loss meant the Airmen will stay in Division 2 for the second straight season after finishing with 44 points in 22 matches.
With 46 points in 21 matches, Jeepney renders its last match irrelevant as it will now join newly-crowned Division 2 champion Ceres-La Salle in the top flight.
The Airmen were actually poised for the all-important victory as they gained the lead just three minutes into the game when Ian Aranta struck for the military squad.
But Manila All-Japan quickly erased the deficit as Ed Walohan struck six minutes later, before Renand Mantua scored the winner in the 20th minute as the fourth-ranked side held on.
