THE finish line is near, but Global FC can take a shortcut to reach it even faster.
The United Football League pacesetter seeks an early coronation in the league as it battles Pachanga-PLDT Home Fibr on Thursday night at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
With 50 points in 20 matches, Global needs only one win in its last four matches to seize its second league crown over the last three years - its first crack coming in the 8 p.m. duel against a dangerous Pachanga side.
“The sooner we wrap this up, the better for us,” team owner Dan Palami said in an article posted on the team’s official website. “We could allow some of our other players to have their time on the pitch in our last few games.”
Bannered by Azkals Jason de Jong, Daisuke Sato, and Amani Aguinaldo, Global has been in cruise control since it supplanted Loyola Meralco from the top spot late in the second round of competition.
Now, the powerhouse squad can turn what seemed inevitable into reality.
But definitely, Pachanga won't hand the championship on a silver platter as the sixth-running side, coached by Noel Marcaida, tries to end its own campaign on a bright note.
That’s why Global coach Leigh Manson remains wary of Pachanga, bannered by its own national team standout in Nate Burkey.
“We want to emphasize how important it is that we stay focused and professional, and we take nothing for granted,” the Scottish mentor said.
Global, though, can even win the title even before its takes the field if Kaya, the only contender alive, loses to cellar-dwelling Pasargad earlier at 5:15 p.m., although the odds are against that happening.
Kaya has 43 points in 22 matches and a loss to Pasargad would only allow the second-running squad to reach a maximum of 49 points in its last two games.
