Local league mainstays, young guns lead Azkals pool

 By:

Youngsters and local-based mainstays dominated the list of players called up by the Philippine Azkals to take part in a training camp for next month’s Asean Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup.

Azkals Development Team (ADT) goalkeeper Julian Schwarzer and Canadian-based Michael Baldisimo were among those who received invitations from the Azkals management for the camp which starts Nov. 21.

Schwarzer is the son of former Australia international Mark Schwarzer, who played for Fulham in the English Premier League from 2008 to 2013. He has made a strong impression on the domestic front for ADT in the Philippines Football League.

Baldisimo, playing the midfield position, is currently with the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer. He was also invited in last year’s AFF camp but begged off due to an injury.

The rest are either those who played in recent age-group competitions on the international scene or among the standouts for their respective PFL clubs as the Azkals hope to bounce back from last year’s campaign.

Still no coach

The Azkals failed to make the semifinals of the tournament—previously known as the AFF Suzuki Cup for sponsorship reasons—for only the second time since 2010’s “Miracle in Hanoi,” when they placed third in Group A behind eventual champion Thailand and semifinalist Singapore.

No coach has yet to be named for the biggest tournament in Southeast Asia, which will pit the Philippines against reigning holder Thailand, runnerup Indonesia, Cambodia and late qualifier Brunei in a bid to secure a top two finish and a semifinal berth in Group A.

The home-and-away setup will return for this year’s edition, which begins Dec. 20 with the Azkals traveling to Phnom Penh to face Cambodia. They’ll host Brunei on Dec. 23 before playing an away game against Thailand on Dec. 26 and facing Indonesia in a home match on Jan. 2.

May listahan na: Players invited to national training pool named

 byErel Cabatbat

By the time this column comes out, the management of the Philippine Azkals would have made an announcement as to who are invited to the training pool from which players will be chosen to represent the country in the Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 next month.

A quick chat with Dan Palami, the Azkals team manager, gave The Designated Kit Man at least an update on those who were invited to come to the camp.

Palami, however, made it clear that nothing is final yet on the actual number of players and who will be available for the camp.

“The list is still incomplete and we are still finalizing the availability of foreign-based Azkals. Some changes might still be made before or even during the camp,” Palami said.

For now, here is the list of players who were invited to join the training poo: Anthony Pintus, Julian Schwarzer, Enrico Mangaoang, Jaime Rosquillo, Audie Menzi, Kouichi Belgira, Bryan Ybañez, Yrick Gallantes, Simen Lyngbo, Pete Andrei Forrosuelo, Stephan Schrock, Kenshiro Daniels, Jeremiah Borlongan, Dennis Chung, Pocholo Bugas, Hikaru Minegishi, Jesus Joaquin Melliza, Eric Giganto, Arnel Amita, Oskari Kekkonen, Javier Gayoso, Marcel Ivan Ouano, Griffin McDaniel, Marco Casambre, Mark Hartmann, Sandro Reyes, Kevin Ray Hansen, Jesse Curran, Jesper Nyholm, Jens Sebastian Rasmussen, Jefferson Tabinas, Michael Robert Baldisimo, Amani Aguinaldo, Oliver Bias, Dylan de Bruycker and Christian Rontini.

Also getting invited to the camp are U-22 players Kamil Jaser Amirul, Chester Gio Pabualan, Haren De Gracia, Harry James Nuñez, Justin Frias, Jacob Francis Maniti, Cyrelle James Saut, Dov Anthony Cariño and Andres Aleguer.

Palami added the Philippine Football Federation is expected to issue  formal call ups to several players soon.

Speaking of Schrock, the Azkals Development Team playing coach and captain has decided to postpone the opening of the Azkals Development Academy (ADA) to fully concentrate on his call up to the national training pool for the forthcoming Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022.

The ADA is supposed to open next week and has generated a warm response since Schrock made the announcement of its establishment the past few days.

“The schedule is tight,” Schroecky explained.

Nevertheless, the Pinoy football icon is so stoked to be among those called and publicly acknowledged by Palami during an episode of 3PTS–Pambansang Tambayan ng Sports over DZME 1530 khz last Sunday.

“You don’t know how much a call-up means to me,” Schrock said.

While he is happy that he has a chance to play once more for the Azkals, Schrock is also aware of criticisms on the name of his football academy, especially coming from fans themselves who expressed resentment over the use of the Azkals’ brand.

“Basically, it’s connecting the Azkals Development Team with an academy because it could be good. I don’t know yet but I’d like to be prepared and if ever we turn it into a club so that players don’t have to choose between the scholarships and turning pro because at the moment that’s still the case, you know, with the ADT team as a team, we are in a kind of a gray zone because if ever we win something as a guest team, we will never compete internationally. Part of the club licensing is having an academy but other than that, I’d like to share knowledge on my philosophy of football as early as possible to some players so that they won’t need that much adjustments. I think it’s a good move to set up the academy under ADT,” he explained.

Regarding the name of the academy, he has this to say.

“If ever we can transform the ADT to a club,  it would not make much sense if we named the academy differently than the club name. You know Kaya FC has an academy and it’s called Kaya and Maharlika FC has one too and it’s called Maharlika. You don’t make much sense to change it into another name,” Schrock added.

Schrock was also quick to say that being accepted to the ADA doesn’t mean that someone is assured of a spot in the ADT or to the Philippine Azkals.

“If people think that just because you joined my academy, you are automatically a member of the national team [then that is incorrect]. The Philippine Football Federation will be the one which will decide that. People should not be confused about this because the ADA and the federation are two different entities,” Schrock added.

Schrock also maintained that Palami, the Azkals Team Manager, knows about the academy and is supportive of his move to set it up.

“Otherwise I would not have used it. (The) Azkals will always be under Boss Dan and of course I asked him about it,” he said.

But for the meantime, Schroecky would focus his mind on the upcoming national training camp set to start this coming Monday, November 21, 2022 at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

FFWC Buildup: Filipinas Clash With Chileans Again

SANTIAGO, Chile – Always looking to improve in preparation for FIFA Women’s World Cup next year, the Philippine Women’s National Team plays another friendly against higher-ranked Chile at the Estadio de la Pintana here.

The Filipinas and La Roja Femenina battled to a 1-1 stalemate at Estadio Sausalito in Viña Del Mar last Saturday with captain Hali Long scoring the opener only to be cancelled out by Sonya Keefe’s late header for the home side.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. local time (6 a.m. Wednesday in the Philippines). Livestream will be available on the PWNT Facebook page and the Philippine Football Federation’s Youtube channel.

It will be the 28th international match of the year for the Filipinas who are ranked No. 53 by FIFA, 15 places lower than Chile.

The Filipinas started the year with an AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign to remember in India, reaching the semifinals and qualifying for the World Cup before bagging the AFF Women’s Championship last July in Manila.

“The one thing that people should appreciate back home is the work that we’ve put in this year not only on the field but off the field,” said Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic.

“Traveling across the entire planet is never easy and the team keeps backing up, ready to work hard, ready to learn, ready to listen and ready to put their bodies on the line physically and mentally for the country. It’s just been an amazing ride and it’s been impressive to see how we’ve come together as a group, overcoming all the challenges that we had to.”

The Filipinas will be facing tougher challenges next year with the World Cup set starting July 20 in Auckland, New Zealand.

They kick off their World Cup campaign against Switzerland in Dunedin on July 21, before facing the hosts four days later in Wellington. A clash with Norway caps their Group A campaign on July 30.

While precious ranking points are at stake in friendly matches like the one on Tuesday night, Stajcic said gauging the Filipinas’ progress is also crucial with eight months to go before the World Cup.

“We’re always trying to see where we’re at and where we can improve,” he said.
“We know how much we’ve achieved this year and how much we’ve progressed, but we’re never settling for that. We’re always looking to get better individually and throughout the whole squad.”

After a generally solid defensive performance in the first match, the Filipinas hope they can figure out a way to pick up a victory against a formidable team that qualified for the Women’s World Cup in 2019 and boasts of the top goalkeeper in the world in Christiane Endler.

“Definitely they (Chile) are tough on the tackles and they like playing with the ball so I think we had to prepare extra for that,” said striker Katrina Guillou. “I know we won’t have a lot of time on the ball. They were good with give and gos and running in behind but I think it also played to our advantage (in the first match). We did have some balls in behind and that gave us a bit more confidence. We were ready to pick off some of their passes and we knew they were ready to build in the middle and I think we were ready for that.”

Chile is also using the match to prepare for the continental playoff tournament in New Zealand early next year.

The team is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, MVP Sports Foundation and team manager Jeff Cheng.

Filipinas Hold Own In 1-1 Draw Vs Chile

The Philippine Women’s National Team battled Chile to a 1-1 draw in their friendly match at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Playing against the 38th ranked side, it was La Roja who started the game strong with chances early on.

However the Filipinas drew first blood when Sara Eggesvik delivered an inviting free kick to skipper Hali Long, who nodded it past Christiane Endler in the 26th minute.

“We showed a good performance and we had a momentum coming out of Costa Rica,” said Long. “The big challenge we had out here against Chile the environment was great the team was physical, great possession on the ball but we really put a good put forward coming out of the gate and really proud of the efforts we had here tonight.”

Long’s goal proved to be a spark for the Philippines as they grew into the match, trying to double their advantage.

Quinley Quezada Katrina Guillou almost made it 2-0 for the Philippines midway in the second half but Endler’s heroics preserved the scoreline.

Late into the match, Chile found the equalizer. A cross from the right flank found Sonya Keefe in the box and sent the header past Olivia McDaniel.

The two teams will meet again this Tuesday, 15 November 2022 (Wednesday morning in Manila) at the Municipal dela Pintana in Santiago, Chile.

The Philippine Women’s National Team is supported by Team Manager Jefferson Cheng, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the MVP Sports Foundation.
