Stallion FC crowned PFF U19 First Division Champions

The PFF U19 Boys National Championship First Division found itself it’s second champion after Stallion FC bested National Capital Region FA, 1-0, in the final last Thursday 24 August 2023 at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex in Talisay, Cebu.

Bacchus Ekberg’s 80th minute spot kick sealed the deal for Stallion, becoming the first team from the second division last year to win the U19 championship.

NCR almost had a breakthrough in the 26th minute. NCR skipper Daniel Christensen converted the initial penalty after a foul by Nathan De Ocampo on Kristien Elopre in the 23rd minute. However, the penalty was retaken after an encroachment in the box. Up stepped Christensen again, but saw his effort hit the post and out.

Stallion also had their chances from Andrei Gonzales and Joaquin Collo but were off target.

Stallion finally found the breakthrough 10 minutes from time. Substitute James Detera broke free of the NCR defense and made his way to the box only to be clipped by Christensen which left the referee with no choice but to award a penalty for Ekberg to convert.

Gonzales had a chance to finish off NCR late in the match but his shot from the one-on-one was just inches wide.

The Battle for Third Play-off saw Panay FA claim third place after a 2-1 win over Central Visayas FA. Mark Estancion and Kent De La Pena scored for Panay while Theo Libarnes scored a consolation for Central Visayas.

NCRFA, Stallion clinch spot in PFF U19 First Division Final

National Capital Region FA and Stallion FC confirmed their places as the finalists of the PFF U19 Boys National Championship – First Division after outlasting their opponents during the semi-final Tuesday 22 August 2023 at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex in Talisay City, Cebu.

NCR opened the semi-final proceedings with a comprehensive 7-1 win over Panay RFA. Daniel Christensen fired a brace in the 17th and 24th minutes to set the tone for NCR

Vicemzo Solidum started the scoring in the sixth minute, before Christensen netted his double. To put NCR three goals up. Rodrigo Mariñas III added a fourth goal in the 35th minute then Lance Locsin made it five unanswered goals on the stroke of half-time.

Substitute Joses Azur fired NCR’s sixth in the 63rd minute and Stephen Flores completed the rout seven minutes later.

Panay would score a late consolation goal in the 80th minute courtesy of Jan Baito, but it was NCR’s day as they advanced to their second successive final appearance in the First Division.

Despite, missing several key players due to their commitments to the Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team, Stallion mounted a strong start to get the second final spot.

James Detera broke the deadlock for Stallion in the 10th minute, but Central Visayas equalized nine minutes later from John Vitualla’s strike to send both teams level at the half, 1-1.

However, Stallion had a blistering second half start with Joaquin Collo making it 2-1 right after the restart before Andrei Gonzales unleashed a curling effort in the 63rd minute to extend Stallion’s tally.

Joseph Garces reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute to ensure a grandstand finish, but Central Visayas rued their chances for the equalizer giving Stallion the win.

Panay and Central Visayas battle it out in the Third Place match at 8:30 AM followed by the championship match between NCRFA and Stallion at 2:00 PM. Both matches will be played at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complexi.

PFF names Torcaso as PWNT head coach

The Philippine Football Federation is delighted to announce the appointment of Australian coach Mark Torcaso as head coach of the Philippine Women’s National Team.

Torcaso, 42, is the reigning A-League Women Coach of the Year, having led Melbourne-based club Western United to the grand finals in its inaugural Australian league season early this year.

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, PFF general secretary Atty Edwin Gastanes and PWNT team manager Jefferson Cheng met with Torcaso in Sydney, Australia over the weekend to formalize the appointment.

Australian Sinisha Cohadzic will be Torcaso’s assistant with the PWNT and will also serve as head coach of the girls’ Under-17 and women’s Under-20 national teams.

Former New Zealand international Andrew Durante, who is also part of Torcaso’s coaching staff at Western United, was also named as an assistant coach in the PWNT program.

“We welcome coach Mark (Torcaso) and his staff to the PFF family,” said Araneta. “We are confident that they will continue raising the standards of the Philippine Women’s National Team on all aspects and take the team to greater heights at the back of a historic and memorable 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.”

Gastanes said Torcaso will handle the PWNT in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September and the AFC Olympic Qualifiers in Perth, Australia in October. Cohadzic will handle the girls’ Under-17 in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifying Tournament in Vietnam next month.

“It is important that we continue the momentum from the Filipinas’ historic FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in New Zealand,” said Gastanes. “We have a motivated and accomplished coach in Mark Torcaso together with his staff, ready to lead our women’s teams in upcoming competitions.”

“We are all excited to start training and competing again. We welcome Coach Mark and his team to Philippine football, and are excited to see them build on the Filipinas’ recent achievements,” Team Manager Jeff Cheng added.

Torcaso, for his part, said that he feels “incredibly privileged to accept this position with the Philippines and I am very thankful to the PFF particularly to team manager Jefferson Cheng for making it happen.”

“Watching the development of the team over the last couple of years has been amazing, from the AFF Championship to the World Cup, and I feel honored to be able to try to continue this growth,” said Torcaso, who also worked with the India women’s national team in one of their camps last year.

“I am excited to take on this opportunity and I can’t wait to meet the players and the other staff in camp next week. I look forward to the challenge alongside Sinisha (Cohadzic) and Andrew (Durante).”

“Being able to contribute my skills and expertise to a group of talented and dedicated athletes is truly a dream come true,” he said.

“Working with the women’s national team will not only allow me to be a part of their journey towards excellence, but also to contribute to the growth and development of women’s sports in the Philippines. I am committed to supporting these remarkable athletes in achieving their goals, both on and off the field.

I am grateful for the trust and opportunity extended to me, and I look forward to building strong relationships with the players, coaching staff, management, and supporters of the team. I am confident that our collective efforts will result in a successful journey filled with achievements and memories that will last a lifetime.”

“It is an honor to now be working with them,” Durante said. “Like Mark, I’m looking forward to the challenge and I am confident that we will be able to continue the team’s success. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and I look forward to what the future holds for this team and for the Philippines as a whole.”
