Younghusband brothers on exclusion: We don’t know the reason why

By Mark Giongco

INQUIRER.net   MANILA, Philippines—Brothers Phil and James Younghusband couldn’t help but feel disappointed over their exclusion from the men’s football squad’s lineup for the Philippine Football Peace Cup, which kicks off Tuesday.

The Fil-British brothers are also clueless as to why they were left out of the team, as they said in a television interview.

“We were very disappointed to learn just a couple of days before. I mean, we don’t know the reason why,” said the striker Phil, who leads the Azkals in international goals scored.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has addressed the issue in a press conference stating that the football body “can no longer meet some of the demands of the brothers.”

“Without getting into too much detail, they are economic even half of which the amount the PFF cannot handle and non-economic are with regards to commitment to schedules.”

Azkals head coach Hans Michael Weiss has said his relationship with the Younghusbands ‘is good’ and that he was able to ‘communicate with them well.’

But the German coach added: “I tried to understand their extracurricular activities again and again and again until it becomes unacceptable to other players.”

“Sometimes, things have to be done for the sake of the team because team is greater than individual,” said Weiss.

The PFF made clear it was not a sanction, adding that it was still uncertain whether Phil and James’ exclusion is temporary or permanent.

  1. our opponents will laugh about that BS what is going on...and for sure they will not complain but be lucky that we kick out two of our best players (one of them being the nations top scorer)...i guess megalomania set in the PFF, managment and coaching staff.....Hopefully this action will be punished.....and hopefully (in case they are still excluded in the Suzuki cup) they will head into desaster......'cause we don't have such a qualitiy team to miss skilled players ...it would be ok maybe (but I am against this) if you could substitute them 1:1...but the Azkals are far away from that

  3. Economic issues? Well I suppose that is the result of treating the Philippines Men's National Football Team like it was the Azkals Football Club. They are playing a schedule of games that far exceeds most countries. They sell a lot of t-shirts and are expected to sell a lot of Puma merchandise. No wonder they want to be paid. Messi is not expected to practice for months with Argentina and play dozens of games. If you treat the team like a club, the players will treat it like a private club.

  6. Playing for the national team doesn't need to have a contract as all nations in the world does. Majority for European players like to play for their National team so they can be scouted by Clubs around the world. So why does PFF offered the Younghusbands a contract? are they a club who can give salary every month to their players?

    - if the other players can't accept the facts I would suggest they should become better football players and train harder first before opening the mouth too wide.....they should first get the same level of football like the Youghusbands and not cry like wimps...
the tow brothers are much better without training like many of the players having a 365 days training camp

  8. I am a YH Fan, they are good players and from an ordinary individuals point of view this is what the team needs, but from a viewpoint of a coach, football is a team of 11 players, they need teamwork, dedication, and you have to raise their morale, and how can you achieve this if you cannot demand from you're players, the foreigners are excused because while they are not with the azkals thay are intensively training with their clubs, better than our trainings, but its different with the Yh bros, because the rest of the azkals are training they are busy with off field activities, endorsements and the likes. Worst is they get to start in the first 11? How will you explain this now to the rest of the players who were more dedicated to practice? Maybe thats the reason coach Weiss cannot take out margarse and gener from the team despite the clamor? Because they are always in practice..I love the Yhs and I want them in the team, they are good, very good but they cannot be an exception to the rule. They have to train, and the coach can only demand if there will be no sacred cows..

    1. truth is that positions in the team are competed for by the players. the best performing player should get the starting job. sadly it's not by how many times present you are in training camp but still sub par in performance that you get the spot. in this case, the YH bros are still miles ahead in skills compare to other players in this present team even without joining their camps. Phil is making scores for the team with pretty impressive ratio through out his international career. but this is a case of a coach who can't stand the number of players who talks instead of improving their game to get the starting job instead. not to say that wolf is talking but he hasn't been producing for the team in competitions so is Ian. I mean it doesn't make sense at all the move by the management. complete BS...

    2. i dont agree with what u said that the best performing player should get the starting job. remember, superstars cant win trophies. it is a team who wins them
