New contract with Azkals’ coach still up in the air

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—The fate of English coach Simon McMenemy remains hanging even as national football team manager Dan Palami is meeting with officials of the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt for a possible assistance package for the Philippine team.

McMenemy, who has received offers to coach a club team in Vietnam and in Indonesia, reiterated his desire for another tour of duty with the Azkals, who made a surprising run to the semifinals of the recent Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup.

“I want to stay where I am because I feel like the job is only half done,” McMenemy told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Although the Azkals beat Vietnam, 2-0, to all but seal their place in the semifinals, they failed to score in their last three matches, including in the two-leg semifinals against Indonesia in Jakarta.

Palami expressed hope that sports fans and observers would respect whatever decision they would make on the coaching of the team.

“We are only after what we feel is best for the team and I hope the fans will understand that,” said Palami, who bankrolled the squad and also paid for McMenemy’s wages.

The possible grant package from the DFB could include a German coach who would be assigned to handle the Azkals, Palami said.

“I think we should consider the offer if there’s an offer,” he added.

McMenemy applied for the Philippine coaching job last year to replace compatriot Des Bulpin, who started preparing the Azkals in December 2009 before leaving the squad in the middle of 2010.

But McMenemy lacks the license required for him to coach in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup next month.

Palami said he has already talked to a coaching candidate in German Karsten Neitzel, who worked as the assistant coach with the Urawa Reds in the Japan League, and would meet with two more prospects Thursday.

The 43-year-old Neitzel, a defensive midfielder who played in the Bundesliga (German first division), also coached Freiburg in the German second division from 1999 to 2008.

Palami said he was able to meet several Europe-based players with Filipino lineage interested in joining the Azkals.

But Palami said the players needed to prove their worth to claim a spot in the roster.

Among those who expressed desire to join the team is Dennis Cagara, who was represented by Jerry Lucena, a veteran midfielder playing in the Danish League.

The 25-year-old Cagara, born to a Filipino father and a Danish mother, plays leftback for AGF Aarhus. He has played for Denmark’s Under-21 side.

“We have several talented players ready and seriously raring to be an Azkal,” Palami said. “Some flew in from Denmark, the rest drove several hundreds of kilometers, and the rest took more than an hour of train ride just to meet with me and express their intention to play. I told most of them to go to Manila and be tested if they indeed have the Azkal bite.”

  2. To the statement of Mr. McMenemy of " wanting to stay because the job is just halfway done"...

Don't you have job to do in securing your coaching license first to qualify as a coach in AFC. Or do you want Mr. Palami to do it for you too.

Mr. Palami has better things to do , and have so much responsibility to tackle for the next AFC Challenge Cup. If you want to really help the Philippine team , help yourself first.

  3. Even before the AFF Suzuki Cup, invitations were sent to those half blood pinoys abroad to play for the PHL however they chose NOT to...now that the azkals is already in the spotlight, these half pinoys suddenly wants to join the team!??? C'mon!!!!!

  4. To the comment saying "Don't you have job to do in securing your coaching license first to qualify as a coach in AFC..."

do you even know how illogical your entire comment is?!?!

  5. With all due respect to all Fans of Mr. McMenemy, I just want to say something that might offend all of you, but i will say what i have to say...

    The other way around ...
did he open the gateway for the AZKALS to change football history in the Philippines OR Did the AZKALS paved a way for him to be in the history of Philippine football to be recognized as a coach.

    Accept it like a Man...
The upcoming AFC cup is under 23, good players of the AZKALS did not qualify by age, did you hear anything from them, no, they just follow the qualification standard of AFC. Why can Coach McMenemy accept the fact that he is not qualified. And should be doing something about it than whine like a spoiled brat.

    Take the Plunge...
Was there any news written that Etheridge , and other so worthy players of the AZKALS are being offered to play on Foreign Teams & Clubs. What I understand is that the News started from Mr. McMenemy being offered himself , up to this time. He just reiterated on the latter news that he is not the only one being offered but the other players too. AZKALS did not confirm it and just kept silent about it (they knew by heart what they are made of) , well he did not. The Media should interview the Vietnam Coach and the Indonesian Club to confirm the veracity of this statement (Fair news). "He should consider the offer IF there's an offer". It would be a Great Experience and Exposure for him.

    Media Freak...
How much media interviews did the AZKALS have as compared to the issues that Mr.McMenemy Brought up ... starting from the Vietnam Coach not shaking his hand , to the Pictures in the club clasping a girl (friend) B@%*$, being offered to coach by other countries , his so called "humble" beginning , His Coaching license issues and many more...
He is not Charismatic as you think he is, that is why the media is hovering all over him. He is wants it , he is asking for it, He is using the media to his advantage not to promote the AZKALS but himself.

    Blame it on your Boss...
I suppose he is praying so hard now that Philippine Team will not qualify to the semi finals or totally lose the AFC challenge cup , for a very sweet revenge because of terminating the "BEST COACH" and a national hero he think he is.Who would they Blame ... Mr. Palami of course.

to All McMenemy Afficionado , Wake up !!! he is not for the AZKALS , he should be coaching the AZ-PHALT "Dahil ang KAPAL ng Mukha Niya"

    @j@ "Sorry Again"

  6. JOB --- yes he does

IT IS... TASK, WORK , ASSIGNMENT , SOMETHING TO DO DURING A LULL TIME , TO BE PREOCCUPIED , TO ENGAGE IN .... PAID OR NOT...

    HIS JOB IS...
To Secure the Necessary Coaching License for him to be able to Coach the future Games of the AZKALS. What is illogical about that, you have to work for it and that is a JOB.

Have you ever watch "SUPERMAN" - and his famous statement "THIS IS A JOB FOR SUPERMAN", was he paid for saving the world, or maybe the script writer made an illogical mistake...

Baka SUKI ka ng Recto, where you can get fake Certificates and Licenses.

Take it on , maybe i am really illogical...or maybe you have other things in mind. I will always admit if I made a mistake.

  7. To anti-McMenemy people:

Keep an open mind. A lot of what the guy with the REALLY long comment said are speculation. I could spend time rebutting your points one by one, but the Azkals are beginning to gain respect, and replacing a perfectly good coach who has already bonded with the team, especially one who has done a good job, is unwise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but McMenemy never said that he's waiting for someone to secure his license for him. An article by Rick Olivares even quotes him saying "I'm working on it", referring to his coaching license.

To sum up as facts state it, nobody is denying that McMenemy is not qualified, McMenemy is working on his licenses, and there's nothing wrong with appearing in the media.

  8. (continuation) Although to be fair, the guy with the "job" point seems to have an open mind.

  9. I will have an open mind next time when the AZKALS have a new coach. sorry and thank you.

  10. It's difficult to understand the arguments of the closed-minded, anti-McMenemy poster without thinking that there's something else behind all that hate. Jealousy maybe? Something in his/her childhood that's affecting his/her reasoning?

Same as the other poster, I will not take the time to argue each point, but just to say that none of it makes any sense.

No offense taken, but there's really nothing rational about your arguments.

  11. ...and this ends one of the most civilised arguments on this blog. lol

  12. Anonymous @j@,

    Ang tanga mo.

    "The other way around ..."
A good team with a bad coach is fail. A bad team with a good coach is also fail. An ok team with an ok coach has a chance. Teamwork invovles the coaching staff too, you moron.

    "Accept it like a Man..."
You obviously don't know what you're talking about. The AFC Cup is not U23, that would be the SEA Games. We're not even playing the AFC Cup but the Challenge cup.

    "Take the Plunge..."
Nonesense. This piece of news appears all over, even in the Jakarta Post.

    "Media Freak..."
Don't you have a newspaper subscription and a TV set?

    "Blame it on your Boss..."
What are you, a psychic mind-reader? You're pathetic.

WTF do people like you have against the guy? So the guy has no B license and can't take the Azkals to the Challenge Cup; then just wish the guy well on his next job and be done with it. Why do need to slander?

    Moron.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Corect me if I'm wrong but as far as I know McMenemy already have the B license and what he needs now so he can bring the NT to the AFC Challenge cup is an A license which he is currently working on and this only means one thing ... He loves his job.

But if he dosen't get the "job" done before Feb then I guess he have no other choice but to leave the Team and work on his license... As for the Azkals they have to find another coach wether they like it or not.
