Cebuano booters, teams feted in Aboitiz Cup opening

CEBUANO footballers and football teams were feted during yesterday’s opening ceremonies of the 18th Aboitiz Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Organizers from the Aboitizland and the the Cebu Football Association (CFA) handed out awards for the Cebuano players who competed for the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) under-14 girls and boys, under 16-boys, under-19 boys and men’s squads. Also awarded were teams that won in the last year’s National Milo Little Olympics and the National PRISAA meet.

The Cebuanos that competed in the under-14 of PFF in various international tournaments are Alexandria Gumilao of Sacred School Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), Joaquin Buyco and Trevor Lood of Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) while the under-16 boys awardees were Pietre Dakay of PAREF Springdale,Joaquin Sanchez of CIS, Marcel Ivan Ouano of USPF, Leo Maquiling of SHS-AdC and Jesse Semblante of DB Boys Home. Valentino Calvo of DBTC was the awardee for playing for PFF’s men’s team. The under-19 awardees were former DBTC player Vincent Erik Lovitoz who now competes for De La Salle University of Saint Benilde along with teammate Jake Vicen and former Leylam FC player Julian Miranda.

PAREF Springdale, which dominated the boys secondary division of last year’s National Milo Little Olympics, was also recognized together with DBTC, which won in the National PRISAA secondary division.

Aboitiz Cup kicks off

AFTER a couple of natural disasters that hit the Visayas pushed back
 its opening, the 16th Aboitiz Football Cup finally kicks off this weekend 
at the Aboitiz Football pitch.

A total of 155 teams are competing in 14 divisions in Cebu’s biggest 
annual football tournament.

The divisions for this year are Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, 
Boys Under-15, Girls Under-15, Boys Under-18, Girls Under-18, 
Under-23, Inter BPO Men’s, 38-and-Above, Men’s Open and 
two new divisions – Inter BPO Ladies and Inter Company.

The champion in this year’s Men’s Open will represent Cebu in the
 PFF Smart Club championships.

The Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Boys Under-15, Girls Under -15 
and Boys Under-18 division will start today, while the Inter BPO 
Ladies, Inter BPO Mens, Inter Company,
 Under-23, Men’s Open and 38-and-Above – kicks off on Sunday.

The only Under-9 game tomorrow will be Canduman FC against 
Bright Academy B.

In the Under-11 division, Lahug FC takes on Tabor Hill FC, 
University of San Carlos (USC)-BED faces BMALV FC,
 Tabor Hill FC will play Warzhockz,
 Lahug FC-B takes on Dynamo FC, Springdale tkes on Phoenix FC.

In the Under-13 division, Center for International Education (CIE) faces off 
with Inayawan FC,Famball locks horns with Striker FC, Phoenix FC
 is facing Tabor Hill FC.

In the Boys Under-15 class, St. John Seminary will play the Talisay Raskals, 
Mactan Camellanz faces off with BMALV FC and USC-BED takes on CIE.

On the other hand, Bright Academy will face Tabor Hill FC in the 
Girls Under-15 division, 
while Abellana National School-Pomeroy will face Mactan Camellanz.

The games will start at 7:30 a.m. today and is expected to end on 
April 30.

Queen City United keeps men’s crown

CEBU Queen City United extended its dominance in the men’s open after it collared its second straight title in the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup with a 3-0 win over former champion Hiroshi yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
“Ni-payoff among practice every day,” said head coach Mario Ceniza.
It was an even match in the first half with both teams showing they were hungry for the title. However, former Hiroshi player Ariel Cahilig gave CQCU the edge with a brilliant strike in the first half.
Things got worse for Hiroshi after Harold Buot got a red card and in the second half, Junard Aguilar and Nigerian Xamxon Olaniyi added two more goals to seal the deal.
Even if they missed Miguel Gonzales and Bryan Eborda in the backline in yesterday’s game, the team compensated for it in their attacks.
Meanwhile, Hiroshi didn’t go home empty handed after their 38-above team beat Erco FC, 2-0, to win the title.
Panny Kyriapoulos scored the first goal in the 26th minute while Yamaguchi Noriyuri banged in the second in the 45th minute.
Meanwhile, University of Southern Philippines Foundation finally got hold of the men’s under-23 after beating University of San Carlos, 2-0.

Queen City, Hiroshi arrange finals duel in Aboitiz Cup

THE competition in the 15th Aboitiz Cup winds down to this: who is hungrier for the title? 
This as one team tries to defend its dominance, while the other wants to reclaim a lost glory.

As Cebu Queen City United (CQCU) returns to the finals, they will be challenged by former 
champions Hiroshi FC next week at Cebu City Sports Center, which will also culminate 
the tournament, which started in November last year.

CQCU silenced rival Crazy Horse, 4-0, in the semifinals, to get another shot at the title. 
Hiroshi FC, on the other hand, routed Erco FC, 4-1.

Dan Villarico, who scored the first goal in the first half in the 32nd minute, 
scored another one in the second half.

Jade Paghubasan and Junard Aguilar contributed one goal each in the second half.

"This will be the first time in Aboitiz that we will play Hiroshi FC," said head coach Mario Ceniza.

Hiroshi, which took hold of the title last 2006, is also in the hunt for a grandslam 
championship in the Cebu Amateur Football Club Interclub tournament this year.

In the Under-23 division, University of San Carlos (USC) dethroned University of 
San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) behind Kiko Recaplaza’s goal in the 8th minute.

It was a redemption of sorts for USC after losing to USJ-R in the Cebu Schools 
Athletic Foundation Inc. football competition.

USC will face University of Southern Philippines in the finals next week.

In the 38-and-above, Glenn Ramos scored a hat trick to lift Erco FC against 
San Roque Football Club in 5-0 beating.

The other scorers for the team were Danilo Juezan and Engr. Rodney Orale.

Hiroshi FC's 38-and-above team blanked CQCU, 4-0, through the efforts of Mario Rago, 
Arvin Mangubat, Oswald Oracion and Panny Kryriakopoulos.

PSCA pulls out shocker vs. USC

PHILIPPINE State College of Aeronautics (PSCA) isn’t used to winning
but yesterday it captured a rare win against one of the top teams in the
Under-23 division of the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup.
PSCA shocked second-ranked University of San Carlos (USC), 1-0
, on the Aboitiz Football pitch.
Jet Araujo converted a penalty shot in the 72nd minute to give PSCA
its second victory of the season.
University of Cebu (UC) drew with University of Southern Philippines
Foundation (USPF), 2-2, in the other Men’s Under-23 match.
Rogelio Castellon broke the lull in the 30th minute for a 1-0 lead for UC.
Albert Tejas scored the equalizer 16 minutes after.
Aljohn Armamento gave USPF the lead with a goal in the 56th minute
but Mole Neri quickly equalized five minutes after.
PSCA is now ranked fourth, just three points behind league leader
University of San Jose –Recoletos (USJ-R), while USC slumped to
third place after USP-F overtook them for the second spot. USPF is
just a point behind USJ-R with eight points while USC, which suffered
its first loss of the season, remained with seven points. UC is still at the
bottom with three points.
In the Men’s Open division at the Cebu City Sports Center,
Don Bosco Magone defeated Apas Mizkits, 2-0; Indiana crushed
Don Bosco Razkals, 4-0; and USJ-R Alumni routed San Roque FC, 2-0.

Hiroshi routs USJ-R, advances to semis

FORMER champion Hiroshi routed University of Jose-Recoletos, 9-1,
 to advance to the semifinals of the men’s open of the 15th Aboitiz 
Football Cup yesetrday at the Aboitiz Sports Field.

Rodney Gandionco and Janrey Nieves each scored a hat trick for the
 team’s fourth straight win in Group D. Jan Michael Flores, Nelson Eco
 and Julius Acre also had one goal each.

The team is trying to reclaim the title it last won in 2006. Aside from that,
 it is also aiming for a third straight title in the Cebu Amateur Football
 Club invitational tournament this summer.

Other teams who are set to make the semis are group leaders Erco FC in
 Bracket A, Crazy Horse in Bracket B and defending champion
 Cebu Queen City United-A in Bracket C.

In the earlier game, the Nepalese-backed Bro Nationals snatched its
 first win against Don Bosco Magone, 1-0, with skipper Sitaula Santosh
 hitting a free kick in the 29th minute. The team now has one win, 
two losses and a draw.

The unavailability of its players had always hampered the team’s
 performance as some of its players are enrolled as fulltime medical
 students at Southwestern University.

Meanwhile, Toledo Harumi lost by default against DB United FC-A,
 while Hiroshi beat Cebu Queen City United, 3-1, in the 38-above division.

Cebu Football -USJ-R beats PSCA for win No. 2

UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos stamped its second win of the Aboitiz Football Cup tournament against rookie team Philippine State College of Aeronautics in a 4-0 demolition in the Aboitiz Sports Field.

The Jaguars clawed Philsca to climb to the standings with still a perfect record of two wins from all games played.

Agapito Bacla-an's 10th minute goal started the ball rolling for the defending champions. He did not stop there as he banked in another one 17 minutes after.

Striker Junjun Pintuan did not let the game pass without him in the list of scorers as he added the team's third goal on the 29th minute.

Gibb Agravante sealed the game in their favor with the fourth goal in the 49th minute.

Philsca went on to play the entire second half but counter-attacks were unsuccesful.

They were also reduced to a 10-man team after Rey Domasaic was booked with a red card in the 79th minute.

Jake Moreno and Rey Domasaic were also called for yellow cards in the 56th and 59th minute, respectively.

USJ-R is now in second place with six points next to the University of San Carlos with seven points from a two wins and one draw.

Meanwhile, Philsca continues to struggle to get their first win of the tournament against the mainstay teams.

In the earlier match, Mark Joseph Felicidad of Mandaue Technical Institute handed Abellana National School-Pomeroy its 2-0 loss in the Boys 17.

Felicidad scored the two goals for MTI.

Today's matches will highlight the last elimination games of the inter-company division featuring teams from Bracket A.

Timex-LS hopes to end its third losing streak but they will have to challenge second-ranked team Innodata, currently with nine points. CDG

In another match, middle-ranked teams Arkiteks and San Miguel United will try to end the tournament with another win even if they can't advance in the quarter finals set next week.

Aside from Innodata, group leader Convergys-A advances to the next round with also nine points.

Nigerian leads QCU in 9-0 win vs. DBU-FC

CEBU-based Nigerian Samson Olaniyi scored four goals for the Cebu Queen City United as they slaughtered Don Bosco United FC (DBU-FC)-A, 9-0, in the men's open of the 15th Aboitiz Cup yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
Olaniyi powered the team early in the match after banking his first goal in the 11th minute, which he followed up with another goal seven minutes after.
A Joseph Rodriguez effort in the 23rd minute closed the first half with QCU ahead, 3-0.
In the 49th minute, Jade Paghubasan sank his first goal, which was succeeded by Olaniyi's third goal in the 53rd mark.
Rene Menchavez and Junard Aguilar joined in the scoring rampage after chipping in with one goal each in the 65th and 74th minute, respectively.
Paghubasan scored his second goal in the 72nd minute, while Olaniyi capped his performance with his fourth goal in the 88th minute.
The team is now on a two-game winning streak after beating FC Inter Cebu in its last match.
Although DBU FC-A fell into the hands of the defending champions, its other team, DBU FC-B routed Apas Mizkits in a 4-0 beating.
In other results for the men's open, Cebu Amateur Football Club survived Indiana, 2-1, while Samba FC swallowed San Roque Football Club, 9-1.
Meanwhile, in the inter-company category, Convergys-A silenced Arkiteks, 4-0, but its other team Convergys-B lost to Stream, 2-0.
San Miguel United relied on its one goal advantage against Timex LS,3-2, while Springdale egded Lear FC, 1-0. A 1-1 draw resulted between Accenture and NCR.

Aboitiz Cup kicks off with a bang

THE non-stop rains did not stop local football fans from gathering at the Aboitiz Sports Field for the launching of the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup yesterday.
Amidst the unexpected downpour, almost 500 football fans walked in and joined the festive opening day, which was highlighted by the presence of the members of the Philippine men’s team.
The Azkals went straight to the Aboitiz Field from the airport and were welcomed by loud cheers from the crowd.
It was the same squad that played in the Peace Cup tournament but with the addition of Phil and James Younghusband, Juani Guirado and Chris Greatwich.
The team will have their practice at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu campus with coach Hans Michael Weiss today.
Rob Gier and Ray Jonsson are expected to arrive tomorrow from Manila as confirmed by team manager Dan Palami, who was inspired by the turnout of the opening.
“It’s a very inspiring event when you see people of different ages coming over all for the love of football,” said Palami.
It is the first time the Philippine Azkals joined the Aboitiz Cup opening and Palami applauded the organizers—Aboitiz Group of Companies and Cebu Football Association—for holding the tournaments even before football became a hit in the philippines.
“I hope other companies will do that for the sport and most especially for the kids,”
said Palami.
The fans enjoyed playing the different games, which awarded some 200 tickets for the Nov. 15 game between the Philippines and Singapore.
A total of 200 tickets were given away in just one hour and 30 minutes.
Among the teams present were the booters from Canduman Elementary School, which will be joining the Players 8, Players 10, Boys 12 and Boys 14 divisions.
“The boys really wanted to come and see the players and be inspired, especially as they will be playing in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association tournament,” said CES head coach Jun Santillan.
Meanwhile, the Cebu City Sport Center football field is 90 percent ready for Thursday’s match between the Philippines and Singapore.
CFA’s Rodney Orale said that for this week, they will have to continue the watering of the grass and by Tuesday morning, they will have the final mowing before painting the lines in the afternoon.

Azkals join Aboitiz Cup opening ceremony

THE 15th Aboitiz Football Cup will have a grand opening ceremony today at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Mandaue with members of the Philippine men’s football team expected to join the crowd in a fiesta-themed celebration.

The opening will start with the parade of the teams and a short program, which will have speeches from top executives of the Aboitiz Group of Companies and the members of the Cebu Football Association (CFA) led by its president Ricky Dakay.

Philippine men’s team manager Dan Palami will also give a short message.

The national team players will then join the crowd in the games, which will have as prize tickets for the Philippines vs. Singapore game on Nov. 15.

According to a list provided by the CFA, the members of the Azkals that will be coming over for the Nov. 15 match are Marwin and Marvin Angeles, Ian Araneta, Chieffy Caligdong, Joshua Beloya, Jason Sabio, Jeffrey Christiaens, Jason de Jong, Ray Jonsson, Rob Gier, Andres Crisanto Gonzales, Christopher Greatwich, Roel Gener, Nestorio Margarse, Misagh Bahadoran, Carlos Alberto Martinez de Murga, Eduard Sacapano, Jose Paolo Pascual, Denis Wolf, Patrick Reichelt, Mathew Uy, Demitrius Irving Omphroy, James Joseph and Philip James Younghusband and Juan Luis Guirado.

Meanwhile, 123 teams were able to pay their registration fee for the Aboitiz Cup. According to the CFA, 155 teams showed interest but teams will only be included in the final count after payment.

The CFA also confirmed that it will drop the Girls 12, Girls 14, Boys 19 and Ladies Open divisions as they failed to meet the minimum number of teams for the competition.

The final deadline for payment is on Nov. 16 as games will begin on the following day.

The tournament is expected to run until April and the winner of the men’s open, which currently has 15 teams, will represent Cebu in the Smart Club Championships.

Aboitiz Football Cup kicks off 15th season with PH Azkals on Nov. 11

Local football fans can look forward to a better and more exciting Aboitiz Football Cup (AFC) as it kicks off its 15th season on Nov. 11 at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City from 1 p.m. onwards.


Top executives of the Aboitiz Group companies will lead the opening. Joining them are members of the country’s national football team, the Philippine Azkals.


Those who will attend the grand launch on Sunday can expect a festive ambiance, a new twist introduced by the organizers to add more fun to the event. There will be parlor games and contests like juggling, longest boot, slalom race, X-mark the Spot (accuracy contest), longest throw-in/target, longest goal and head to head volleyball, all designed to test the skills of the participants. Winners of these games will win tickets to the international friendly match of Azkals versus Singapore Lions on Nov. 15 at the Cebu City Sports Center.


Prior to the kickoff, Aboitiz Foundation and the Cebu Football Association will sign a memorandum of agreement on Nov. 7 at the Persimmon to seal their partnership in staging the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup, the premier football competition and longest-running tournament in Cebu.


Aboitiz Foundation has increased its the funding for the six-month tournament from P1.1 million last year to P1.3 million. The Cup is part of the Foundation’s corporate social responsibility program to develop well-rounded individuals and share the spirit of sportsmanship that will translate into passion in everything they do. It is also part of the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to support the development of football in Cebu.


During the games, more than 4,000 players from participating schools and football clubs will compete under a league-type format in different age brackets both in men’s and women’s categories. Titles at stake are Players 6, Players 8, Players 10, Boys 12, Girls 12, Boys 14, Girls 14, Boys 17, Girls 17, Boys 19, Boys 23, Ladies open, men’s open and 38-up.

Aboitiz Cup opens its doors to all

Over 4,000 booters spread in 155 teams are all raring to see action in the 15th Aboitiz Cup, one of Cebu's longest running football events scheduled to unfurl this Sunday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
A festive kick-off salvo has been set by the organizing Cebu Football Association (CFA), with no less than the Philippine Azkals and top officials of Aboitiz gracing the affair.
If things turn out better than the previous editions, the Aboitiz Group of Companies is bent on making the event a national competition.
The most important thing, however, is that the Aboitiz Cup is now opening its doors to all.
“We want to clean up the ranks in Cebu first. The Aboitiz Cup is not only for Cebu, but for the development of football,” said Aboitiz Foundation AVP Sonny Carpio in a press conference yesterday at Persimmon in Brgy. Mabolo.
As part of the “cleaning process”, all teams and players that have beeen “banned” by the previous CFA Board are now allowed to join the event including that of the Football Club-Inter-Cebu of Manfred Schuwerk and Hiroshi FC among others.
“There are documents handed over to us by the previous board (led by Richard Montayre) regarding those teams that were banned, so we are letting them play in the upcoming event. I want everyone to know that as CFA president, I’m not an executioner nor a judge. We have a disciplinary committee to handle it if ever there will be issues about banning and other sanctions to be made,” said CFA president Ricky Dakay.
The tournament follows the same rules as last year except for the implementation of “fair play” award or the sportsmanship award to a team or player.


The traditional individual awards will also be given away like the best goal keeper, defender, midfielder, striker and MVP.
The men's open battle, on the other hand, serves as Cebu's qualifying for next year's PFF Smart Club Championships.
The other categories to be contested are the players 6, 8 and 10, boys and girls 12, 14, 17, boys 19 and 23, ladies open, 38-above and inter-BPO. (FREEMAN)

15th Aboitiz Football Cup to start on Nov. 11

The 15th Aboitiz Football Cup will open with no less than the Philippine Azkals as special guests on Nov. 11 at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

The presence of the country’s men’s senior football team was confirmed by its manager Dan Stephen Palami, who was in town yesterday for the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the Cebu Football Association and the Philippine Football Federation for CFA’s hosting of the international friendly match between the Azkals and the Singapore Lions dubbed as the “Faceoff”.

The Azkals will just be one of the attractions as the CFA vows to bring back the Aboitiz Football Cup to its position of being the biggest 11-a-side tournament in Cebu.

Rico Navarro, one of the CFA board members, said that there has been some concerns that the tournament is losing its brand equity and CFA’s task is to bring it back as Cebu’s premiere football league.

As part of the CFA’s plan to bring back the tournament’s prestige, they have concocted a fun-filled opening ceremony as opposed to the traditional opening ceremonies.

Aside from the Azkals, the opening day will resemble a festival with the holding of parlor games such as a juggling conest, x-mark the spot, longest boot, longest throw, slalom race, longest goal, and head to head volleying.

FREE TICKETS AT STAKE

These fun games will be open not only to the participating teams but also to spectators with the winners to go home with a ticket to the Azkals versus Lions match.

More tickets will also be raffled off during the opening ceremony.

Booths will also be set up for food and drinks as well as for photos.

At least 130 teams have already signed up for the tournament.

The number of participants is expected to go up with the deadline of submission of entries set on Nov. 9.

Categories to be featured are players 6, players 8, players 10, boys 12, boys 14, boys 17, U23, girls 17, ladies’ open, BPO, 38-Above and the men’s open.

CQCU-A vs Crazy Horse in men’s open

THE CEBU QUEEN City United (CQCU) A and the CrazyHorse set up a finals clash for the men’s open title of the 14th Aboitiz Football Cup after winning their respective semifinals matches yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

This is the first time the two teams will meet for the men’s open title of the Aboitiz Football Cup.

The last time they met in the same tournament was in 2009, wherein CrazyHorse frustrated CQCU for the men’s league title.

This year, the Cebu Football Association (CFA) decided to hold only the men’s open category after a men’s U23 and men’s U19 were added to the tournament.

The winners in these three categories will be representing Cebu in various regional and national tournaments.

CrazyHorse clinched its finals ticket with a 3-0 dumping of Don Bosco United Football Club (DBUFC) A while CQCU A outsmarted University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Alumni, 3-1, for its finals entry.

CrazyHorse scored its three goals in the 30-minute extension after the match in regulation ended in a scoreless draw.

Hayato Ayabe penetrated the DBUFC A’s defense six minutes into the extension to put CrazyHorse one up.

Bernard Rotich contributed his goal in the 20th minute while Mitsuo Tsunakiri put CrazyHorse out of reach when he scored with just four minutes left in the extension.

In the other semifinals match, USJ-R scored early at the 5th minute on a header by Robert Mamac.

In the second half, CQCU picked up its game with relentless attacks to the goal while USJ-R was hounded with bad passing and inability to control the ball.

Benedict Arriola finally got the best of USJ-R’s goalkeeper in the 66th minute when he found the back of the net.

Arriola once again struck in the 74th minute on a one-on-one with a USJ-R defender to give CQCU a one-point lead at 2-1.

CQCU continued its offensive attack and with two minutes left, Rommel Cuizon sealed CQCU’s entry in the finals.

IT will be a faceoff between Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) and Canduman–Dedon as they open the semifinal matches today of Players 8 division in the 14th Aboitiz Football Cup.

Canduman will try to get even with SHS-AdC, which routed them in the last Don Bosco Technology Center Football Festival Players 8 championship.


But it will be a tough task for Canduman as SHS-AdC which is the top team in their group, after winning all of its seven matches

Canduman has five wins and one loss.

“Last mi nag-abot kay napildi mi and hopefully makabawi mi nila ugma. Ready na ang mga bata excited na sila muduwa,” said Canduman Head coach Jun Santillan.

This is a good performance for the SHS-AdC who returned this year in the Players 8 after missing it last year.

“There is no specific game plan. It’s more on the technical side where the players kick and run,” said SHS-AdC head coach Jong Perez.

Perez and his boys are challenged by some players who cannot join the practice because of examination schedules but still confident with his boys performance today.

The match will be followed by the game between Giuseppe FC against DBTC 1.

Meanwhile, the Players 10 will have the quarterfinal matches in another pitch with DBTC 4 and SRFC-A opening up the games followed by the match between SHS-AdC and HIS.

The last two matches will feature CIS against Bright Academy and DBTC 5 against Canduman.

Crazyhorse makes Aboitiz Cup semis, to play without Fegidero next week

DEFENDING champion Crazyhorse FC stood its ground as it defeated Panalpina FC, 1-0, in their highly-physical men’s open game of the 14th Aboitiz Cup yesterday at the Aboitiz Football Field.

The win gave the Crazyhorse a ticket to the semifinal round set next week.

Veteran player Joshua Fegidero scored the winning goal in the 22nd minute to give Crazyhorse the lead early in the first half.

But it became a different story in the second half after a clash with Panalpina’s Bryan Flores booked them both with red cards that forced them out of the game.

Flores was defending Fegidero, when the two got too close for comfort. As the two collided in a tense situation, Flores allegedly punched Fegidero, who retaliated with a blow.

A short commotion ensued with the Crazyhorse goalkeeper leaving his post to join the fracas.

This was the second altercation of the two players after Fegidero was elbowed by Flores and was handed a yellow card earlier in the game.

Cooler heads prevailed and the match continued with Crazyhorse getting the semifinals slot.

It will, however, miss the services of Fegidero by virtue of an automatic one-game suspension because of the incurred red card.

“Okay naman, naayos na. Pasok na kami sa semis kaso sayang lang at hindi makakalaro si Joshua,” said Crazyhorse player Gary Panagsagan.

Panalpina, on the other hand, admitted that they lost the motivation to play after the minor encounters happened.

“It affected our game. We lacked practice, communication and motivation,” said Voltaire Montebon of Panalpina.

In earlier matches, the University of San Jose Recoletos- Alumni won against San Roque Football Club, 3-1, while Erco FC and DB Magone ended with a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose Recoletos emerged the winner in the men’s Under-23 division against University of Cebu, 1-0.

SRFC scores another win

SAN Roque FC Arsenal improved its record in the men's open of the 14th Aboitiz Cup yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field.

SRFC Arsenal routed Queen City United- B, 4-0, for its fourth win in the men's open.
Last week, they defeated Uptown United, 5-0.


In the next match, Panalpina scored a victory via default after Queen City United-A forfeited its game.

This is the second time QCU-A missed its scheduled match in the Aboitiz Cup because of the team's participation in the United Football League Second Division.

In the earlier matches, the top two teams in Group B Southwestern University and University of San Jose-Recoletos Alumni drew their match, 1-1, while Defending champion Crazy Horse FC swept Sumaba FC, 25-0.

Cebu Football - Erco beats SFC in 14th Aboitiz Cup

ERCO is slowly closing in on the top spot of bracket A in the Men’s Open of the 14th Aboitiz Football Cup after winning its assignment yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku Mandaue City.

Erco edged Subangdaku Football Club (SFC), 3-2, to solidify its second place standing with 12 points off four wins and two losses.

Erco has the same points as bracket leader Queen City United (QCU) A. But the latter has an edge with a goal difference (GD) of 24 points.

The men’s Open follows a cup-type format, which means that the top two teams in each bracket will advance to the crossover semifinals.

QCU A lost a chance to pad its points after losing to Don Bosco (DB) Magone, 0-2.

The team which had the most impressive win in bracket A was CrazyHorse, which logged a 14-0 rout of Don Bosco United Football Club (DBUFC) B.

The win brought CrazyHorse to third place with nine points to its name.

In bracket B, QCU B completed an 8-1 trashing of San Roque Royal United (SRRU).

9th Thirsty Cup attracts 307 teams

THE ninth year of the Thirsty Football Cup set to open next month is getting bigger with already 307 teams listed.

This is the number of teams who called organizers last week to reserve slots for the two-weekend tournament from Feb. 11 and 12 and Feb. 18 and 19 at the University of San Carlos Football Field in Talamban.


However, from the 307, only a little over 50 teams have submitted the registration form and paid the entry fee for the tournament.

For teams in the Players 6, 8, 10, Boys 12, Boys and Girls 14 and Boys and Girls 19, the registration fee is P500, while in the men’s and women’s open, 36- and 42-above divisions, the fee is P1,000.

Organizers did not raise the registration fee fee from last year to attract more teams and to encourage first-time clubs to join the competition.

If all the 307 teams who reserved slots sign up, this year will feature the largest field in tournament history.

Aside from the Cebu-based squads, there are also 22 out-of-town teams from Masbate, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Tacloban, Bohol and Iligan that will join.

Last year, 260 teams joined the football festival.

UFL stars to grace Sinulog Cup

PLAYERS from the United Football League will arrive today to grace the awarding ceremonies of the 2nd Sinulog Football Festival.
The group will be led by Global Smartmatic goalkeeper and Cebuano Paolo Pascual with teammate Fil-Iranian Misagh Bahadoran.

Joining them is Mark Hartmann from Meralco Loyola Sparks, Lexton Moy from Kaya FC and Nestorio Margarse from the Philippine Army.
They have a scheduled “meet and greet” with the fans and supporters as they tour in different venues.
Their first stop will be at the San Roque Football Field before heading to University of San Carlos - Talamban Field where the men’s open is played.
After that, the boys will be at the Cebu City Sports Center to award the winning teams of the Players 6 to Boys 17 divisions.
UFL Technical Director Richie Gannaban and marketing manager Michael Torre will also be flying in with the players in the first provincial coverage of Aksyon TV under TV 5.
The players won’t be staying for long as they are booked to go back to Manila tonight to resume practices with their respective teams as the UFL season is set to open on Jan. 14.
