JARVEY Gayoso delivered in the biggest stage as he led Ateneo past Far Eastern University, 1-0, in thefinals affair of the UAAP men's football tournament on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Gayoso carried the Blue Booters on his back just as he has done all season long, scoring the lone goal in the 39th minute to give Ateneo its seventh UAAP championship - and first since 2013.
Facing a veteran Tamaraw squad, the Blue Booters struggled to find the breakthrough early, but got just that when Gayoso took advantage of Paolo Bugas' error in the backline.
The veteran Tamaraw gave the ball back to his centerback but Gayoso got the interception and challenged the Tamaraw keeper.
The sophomore forward's initial attempt was saved, but persistence paid off for him as he scored on the rebound for the most important goal of his young career.
The two squads then negated each other, with the battle being mainly fought on the midfield.
Gayoso was expectedly named the tournament MP and got the Golden Boot award as well after finishing with 12 goals for the season.
His teammates also were recognized as Jayrah Rocha was named the best defender, AJ Arcilla as the best goalkeeper while Jordan Jarvis was named rookie of the year.
