Biantan: Time for PTV4 to step-up for as PFL kicks off

by Jack Biantan

THE government owned PTV 4 has a storied past on covering prestigious sports events such as Olympics, Asian Games and the South East Asian Games. The station also used to cover the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for many years until TV 5 cornered the contract in in 2005. This year, PTV 4 is reportedly covering live the Philippines Football League (PFL) matches every weekend. I have started viewing PTV 4 just recently to check if they actually have advancers or just a few clips to hype the league. Although, I have seen a PTV 4 report on the launching of the PFL at the Shangri-La at The Fort in Taguig last week, all I have seen so far at PTV 4 are their sleepy educational programs and their pro government news. The station has also been busy selling consumer products like Slim Abs. There has been no announcement yet from the listless PR persons of the Philippine Football Federation or from PTV 4 itself. The social media however is now getting crazy and various football fans have started to form their own “Ultra” supporters. PTV 4 would need massive logistics and advertisers to make the coverages successful. As a government owned company, the station has its own budget but I do not think they are willing to consume that budget by covering the PFL. There will be four matches every weekend. The Kaya Football Club (FC)-Makati will defend its home turf at the University of Makati against Ceres FC-Negros, while Stallions-Laguna FC will host FC Meralco-Manila on May 6. The next day, Ilocos United FC will host the Davao Aguilas FC at the Quirino Stadium in Bantay Ilocos Sur, while JPV Marikina plays Global-Cebu FC at the Rizal Memorial stadium. The Marikina City stadium is still undergoing repairs and is sharing the Rizal Memorial with Loyola-Meralco Manila. Hopes are high in the PTV 4 coverage. Local football fans who could not see the matches in person would really love to watch the matches on TV. It is time for PTV 4 to make local football history. (l.biantan@gmail.com)

  1. IMHO every cities should have a representative(hero) local player that will make this PFL interesting in the eye of masses, maybe in the future he will represent a brand of his team, without this,it will never prosper it will remain only a fairy tale.

  2. PTV 4 limited lang cya as broadcast partner ng PFL.Eh PR campaign nga against destabilization plot from Liberal Party opposition,EU, UN, US democrats and time magazine eh walang kakayahang mag PR ang PTV4 sa PFL pa kaya. Ang magagaawa lang ng PTV ay coverage lahat ng matches sa tv and online livestreaming, and i preach ang good news sa social media.

  3. The best solution for PTV 4 is to promote PFL and the station itself kailangan nila ng foreign media partner or foreign players na mag invest sa equipment and promotional campaigns.I think nasa agenda na ng present government na upgrade ang PTV 4 likd bbc and nhk pero ang priority nila i launch ang Salam Islamic tv.konting tiyaga at pasencnya muna sa limited promotion ng PFL.sa totoo lang PFL ay nasa good hands ng PTV 4 konting hintay na lang pag na lift naang 60-40 foreign ownership restriction then magkakaroon na rin ng competition and genuine foreign direct investments to boost PTV pati na rin mga clubs and FA sa PFL

  4. Partners PFL and PTV ay nasa right track sa
pag launch ng PFL unlike MBA & Abs cbn masyadong ni railroad and pinabongga ang launching kaya ilang yrs lang nag fold up na agad.mas maganda na yung less exposure ang PFL through social media and word of mouth ang pag promote kaysa mag invest at gumastos ng malaki sa PR campaign and mag hire ng dagdag ad agency
