Global FC began their UFL Cup group D campaign with a comfortable 4-1 win over Forza FC Sunday night at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Mark Hartmann bagged a brace, while Norio Suzuki scored a debut goal and Hikaru Minegishi also found the back of the net as Global opened its bid to regain the title it last won in 2010.
Matthew Hartmann, Jahanbakhsh Taher, and OJ Clarino also made their debut for the People's Club.
Global won an early penalty within the first ten minutes of the match. Izo Elhabib was already through on goal but Forza's Ronnie Espinosa tackled the Sudanese forcing the referee to point to the spot. Mark Hartmann had to take the penalty twice to give Global the lead in the 10th minute.
Mark Hartmann almost doubled the lead in the 14th minute. Matthew Hartmann and Suzuki combined well on the left flank but the younger Hartmann fluffed the chance in front of goal.
Suzuki netted his first goal for Global in the 20th minute. Mark Hartmann placed a weighted ball into space which the Japanese finished off with a sublime left-footed strike. Suzuki could have doubled his tally five minutes after. Skipper Yu Hoshide placed the pass for Mark Hartmann, who was able to pick out Suzuki but he blasted it over the bar.
Elhabib had two chances right before half-time that went begging. The first came in the 35th minute after Suzuki's effortless play but the Sudanese's sent his shot straight to the near post. The second was a thundering shot three minutes before half-time but was pushed away by the goalkeeper.
Concerns grew for Global right before half-time. Amani Aguinaldo made a rushing tackle on a Forza player inside the Global box after an defensive error. The defender was stretchered off with a pulled hamstring after the tackle.
Leigh Manson made four changes at the half. However, Forza defended well for a good part of the second half, before Minegishi fired a third goal off a Hartmann delivery in the 74th minute.
Hartmann added a fourth two minutes after. The forward blasted a long range effort that went to the top corner.
Forza claimed a consolation goal right before full-time from the free kick. Patrick Deyto already had a touch on Jangobah Johnson's free kick, before rolling past the line.
