Global FC to field fresh, foreign-flavored lineup as it seeks to atone for AFC Cup drubbing

From: Karlo Sacamos

EXPECT Global FC to field a fresh, foreigner-powered squad when it takes on Philippine Army on Saturday in the United Football League at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. After turning to a squad made up mostly of Filipinos in their Asian Football Confederation Cup loss to South China last Wednesday, Global coach Leigh Manson is counting on a side composed of imports led by Yu Hoshide, Sam Bonney, and Izo El-Habib, as well as Pinoy standouts who seldom see action. “With our schedule the last six weeks and the upcoming one, we need to rotate more and use the whole squad,” the Scottish mentor told Spin.ph on Friday, ahead of the 5:15 p.m. matchup. All but three of the 19-man AFC Cup squad were Filipinos, with Renato Gonzalez and Raul Martinez of Mexico and Japanese stalwart Masaki Yanagawa the only foreigners, owing to an AFC rule that puts a cap on the number of foreigners seeing action for a team. With a fresh side, the defending league champions, toting 10 points in four matches, seek to sustain their three-match winning streak and their hold of the top spot in the 10-team Division 1 standings. The powerhouse squad faces an Army side that has yet to register in the win column after two outings. Loyola Meralco, running third with nine points in three matches to show, tries to keep its unbeaten run as it battles fourth-running Stallion FC, while Green Archers United and Manila Jeepney face off in the opener at 2:15 p.m.
