Global, Stallion clash in battle of heavyweights

By Karlo Sacamos

GLOBAL and Stallion-Sta. Lucia test each other’s mettle on Tuesday in a battle of the United Football League heavyweights at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
In their first meeting since the Stallions edged Global, 2-1, last December to rule the UFL Cup, both champions face off in the main event at 7:30 p.m. with one perfect record set to broken.
Defending League champion Global and Stallion are both unbeaten in six games with a similar 18-point tally, but the former holds a four-point lead on goal difference.
Stallions coach Ernie Nierras downplayed the matchup between the league’s top two teams, but stressed the importance of a victory.
“It’s important just like any game," said Nierras. "We do not want to lose to Global and I am sure Global feels the same.”
“It’s just the first round, but points and goals are important already,” the concurrent Philippine women’s team coach added. We just want to make sure we keep improving each game.”
Defensive midfielder Jason de Jong, a Stallion currently on loan to Global, is set to miss the game as per agreement of both teams.
Third-running Loyola Meralco seeks to keep up with the leaders as it collides with seventh-ranked Green Archers United collide earlier at 5:15 p.m.
