Stallion loans mainstay Jason de Jong
Stallion Sta. Lucia FC on Tuesday put star midfielder and national team mainstay Jason De Jong on loan to United Football League champion and fellow contender Global FC.
Coach Ernie Nierras of Stallion said that the team lent De Jong to help Global beef up its roster in its upcoming campaign in the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup this year. Interestingly, Global and Stallion are currently battling it out on top of the League table with both having 15 points.
“(Global owner) Dan (Palami) needs Filipino players for the President’s Cup. Dan is my friend. We will always try to help each other,” Nierras told InterAKTV. “I am sure Jason will be a positive contributor to Global’s cause.”
The President’s Cup is a tournament among clubs from the emerging football nations in Asia which won their respective domestic leagues. Global will be the first Philippine squad to join the competition.
But the tournament, which is slated in May, imposes a limit on the number of imports in a club. Global currently has eight foreigners in its roster.
In a statement, Nierras explained that the move will also benefit Stallion in its goal “to compete for the number one slot in the UFL.”
“He was dropped from our line up to make room for future signings, to be announced soon,” Nierras said. “All the decisions we make as far as adding and dropping players are specific to the direction and intention of the club to compete for the #1 slot in the UFL.”
Stallion signed De Jong, along with Spanish imports Rufo Sanchez and Joaco Cañas, last year. The squad then quickly catapulted as one of the UFL’s elite teams this season.
