GREEN Archers United drew a late goal from its offensive spark off the bench to salvage a 1-1 draw against Philippine Army on Saturday night in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Despite dominating possession and conjuring more chances throughout the game, the Archers saw themselves down early and were only rewarded in the second half when Jesus Melliza scored the equalizer just two minutes after he came in the 54th minute.
Meliton Pelayo gave the Troopers the lead in the 11th minute when he fired past Archers goalkeeper Patrick Deyto with a left-footed strike at the left side of the penalty box.
“Nung first half pa lang, makikita na lamang kami pero kami pa yung naunahan,” said the 20-year-old Melliza, the reigning Best Scorer of the UAAP for Far Eastern University.
“Kaya pursigido talaga ako i-score yun kasi advantage yung kalaban. Kailangan ko i-goal yun para mag-tabla at yung momentum mapunta sa amin,” added Melliza, who also scored in his first game after the UAAP wars against Air Force.
The stalemate had both clubs staying in their respective places in the standings.
The Archers are in seventh place with five points in five games, and the Troopers in ninth with a point to show after five games.
“Sayang kasi sana nakuha na namin yung first win namin. Siguro kontinng focus pa sa game at tulong-tulong talaga,” Troopers goalkeeper Ed Sacapaño said.
“Pero malaking bagay na rin sa amin ‘to. Sana sa sususnod na game namin, ma-sustain namin,” added the prolific homegrown Filipino ‘keeper, who is set to be named Mr. Football, along with Azkals teammate Chieffy Caligdong, when the Philippine Sportswriters Association holds its Annual Awards Night on March 16.
