Pint-sized hitmen out to leave giant mark

By Karlo Sacamos

TWO pocket-sized scorers hope to deliver anew when Pachanga-Diliman and Green Archers United clash on Saturday night in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Boyet Cañedo, a 5-4 hitman who registered a hat-trick in just six minutes in Pachanga’s 5-1 thrashing of Philippine Air Force three weeks ago, hopes to sustain his scoring spree for the Division 2 titlists who are looking to move back to the upper half of the standings.
One of the league’s most efficient scorers, 5-foot-2 Jesus Melliza is expected to lead the Archers’ charge anew as the eighth-running club tries to avoid dropping into the relegation zone.
The Archers, only ahead of two Armed Forces clubs in Army and the Airmen in the 10-team field, are aching to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Loyola Meralco three weeks ago.
The lone Division 1 match kicks off at 8 p.m.
In Division 2 play two hours earlier, second-running Agila, with 12 points in six matches, aims to move closer to leader Socceroo when it faces another struggling military club in Navy, which is at the bottom of the standings with only five points to show.

UAAP Best Scorer hopes to keep the spark for Green Archers in UFL

Karlo Sacamos

GREEN Archers United stalwart Jesus Melliza has definitely picked up from where he left off in the recent UAAP season.

After emerging the Best Scorer in the country's top collegiate league where he led Far Eastern University Tamaraws to a third-place finish, the 20-year-old La Paz, Iloilo native has scored in both games since he suited up for the Archers in the United Football League.

And Melliza hopes to continue providing the spark for the team when it takes on winless PSG on Saturday night at the Emperador Stadium.

As a starter against Philippine Air Force last February 28, the 5-foot-2 striker stood tall by scoring the first of the team’s four goals just 23 minutes into the game.

And as a substitute against Army last week, Melliza proved why he is one of the league’s most efficient scorers, along with Kaya’s Janrick Soriano, when he scored the team’s lone goal that forced the draw just two minutes after he came in the 54th.

Melliza, who scored more than 20 goals in the UAAP season, won’t mind if he continues to come off the bench in their 8 p.m. meeting against the Iranian-laden squad, which is in eighth place with a point to show in five games.

“Okay lang na sub ako. Syempre second half pagod na rin sila kaya pag pasok ko, fresh pa. Alam ni coach yung ginagawa niya kaya tiwala ako sa kanya.”

So long as he does his job for the Archers, who are in the seventh spot with four points in five matches, like he always did for the Tamaraws.

“Syempre iba yung level ng UFL sa UAAP. Kung hindi ka one hundred percent dito, siguradong babagsak ka.”

One person who can definitely attest to Melliza’s potential is teammate and fellow Ilonggo Chieffy Caligdong.

“He has a good spirit. He is a good-attitude player," the national team skipper said. “Malayo pa mararating ng bata na ‘to."

"Buo ang loob every time na ipasok siya. Yun yung mga tipo ng player na kailangan natin in the future,” the Philippine Sportswriters Association's Mr. Football co-awadee added.

Archers draw late goal from UAAP Best Scorer to salvage tie vs Army

Karlo Sacamos

GREEN Archers United drew a late goal from its offensive spark off the bench to salvage a 1-1 draw against Philippine Army on Saturday night in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Despite dominating possession and conjuring more chances throughout the game, the Archers saw themselves down early and were only rewarded in the second half when Jesus Melliza scored the equalizer just two minutes after he came in the 54th minute.
Meliton Pelayo gave the Troopers the lead in the 11th minute when he fired past Archers goalkeeper Patrick Deyto with a left-footed strike at the left side of the penalty box.
“Nung first half pa lang, makikita na lamang kami pero kami pa yung naunahan,” said the 20-year-old Melliza, the reigning Best Scorer of the UAAP for Far Eastern University.
“Kaya pursigido talaga ako i-score yun kasi advantage yung kalaban. Kailangan ko i-goal yun para mag-tabla at yung momentum mapunta sa amin,” added Melliza, who also scored in his first game after the UAAP wars against Air Force.
The stalemate had both clubs staying in their respective places in the standings.
The Archers are in seventh place with five points in five games, and the Troopers in ninth with a point to show after five games.
“Sayang kasi sana nakuha na namin yung first win namin. Siguro kontinng focus pa sa game at tulong-tulong talaga,” Troopers goalkeeper Ed Sacapaño said.
“Pero malaking bagay na rin sa amin ‘to. Sana sa sususnod na game namin, ma-sustain namin,” added the prolific homegrown Filipino ‘keeper, who is set to be named Mr. Football, along with Azkals teammate Chieffy Caligdong, when the Philippine Sportswriters Association holds its Annual Awards Night on March 16.

UFL Cup - Green Archers trounce Dolphins United 7-2

Karl Decena, InterAKTV ·

Green Archers United Globe enjoyed a scoring spree in the second half to thrash Dolphins United, 7-2, in United Football League Cup action Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Arnie Pasinabo scored in the 14th minute, then team captain Tating Pasilan nailed another goal in the 25th minute to lift the Green Archers to a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Green Archers continued their rampage just seconds after the break, as Ronnie Aguisanda hit the net in the 46th minute and Jesus Melliza blasting a goal in the 64th minute to give their team a commanding 4-0 edge.
But the Dolphins answered moments after, with Romnick Echin scoring off a free kick in the 73rd minute. The Green Archers then countered the goal quickly after Nikko Villa slotted a goal from an Ayi Nii Aryee dish in the 74th minute.
Paolo Salenga then hit back for the Dolphins, burying a goal in the 77th minute to trim his team’s deficit to 5-2.
But the Green Archers broke loose once again, as Ayi scored from outside the box in the 83rd minute and Melliza hitting the net in extra time for his second goal to cap their dominating performance over the Dolphins.
The victory puts the Green Archers in second place of Group B with four points in two matches.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins, who played their first match of the season, are at the bottom of Group B with no points to show.

Green Archers FC hold football clinic

Monday, August 6, 2012
MANILA-based Green Archers Globe Football Club conducted a football clinic last Saturday at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Victorias City as part of its outreach program.
Monchu Gracia, club manager and CEO of Orient freight, said “The Don Bosco clinic is the second leg of our ‘Personal Development through Sport Development’ program in partnership with Globe Telecom and Orient Freight International. Last Thursday we conducted a clinic for kids in Lapaz, Iloilo and played a friendly game with Central Philippine University (CPU) on Friday (August 3). On August 5 we will be off to San Carlos City for another clinic and another friendly game with San Carlos booters.”
“Football is life. That’s what we want to impart to kids. We want to teach them the right attitude in life thru football. We want them to learn that how they play in the field reflects how they will eventually live their lives,” Garcia explained.
The Green Archers donated more than 50 balls: 26 Molten footballs in Don Bosco, another 26 balls were given to Lapaz Foorball Club, and some balls received by San Carlos City.
Giving back to our roots
The program is the Green Archers and Globe Telecom’s way of giving back to the kids what blessings they enjoy from football. The venues of the clinics were specifically selected with the “giving back” theme in mind.
Lapaz, Iloilo is the hometown of Green Archers’ head coach Rodolfo Alicante, while Don Bosco-Victorias is where assistant coach Franklin Muescan honed his football skills. San Carlos City is the home of seven Green Archers.
“I thought that the friendlies will be the highlight of this outreach program for our players. I am happy to learn that the players have taken warmly to the clinic. After the clinic, they talk about the kids and how they enjoy being with them. The players even remember the names of some kids in the clinic in their conversations,” Garcia beamed.
Upon their return to Manila, the Green Archers will also conduct a football clinic at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa for the kids of prison inmates.
Garcia disclosed that, with the Muntinlupa clinic, he aims to give his players a glimpse of how the poor kids at the penitentiary live.
“It works both ways. Our players will see how the kids of inmates live while the kids can also be inspired by our players that the kids, too, can improve their lots in life through football,” Garcia explained.
Star Team
Interestingly, the Green Archers rooster does not boast of big name players like the other teams in the United Football League where the club competes in the first division. It was at the lower half of the ladder in the recently concluded UFL campaign but the club is eyeing a strong finish in the upcoming UFL league slated to open on September 19.
Garcia shared the philosophy of the Green Archers and Globe Telecom for the club.
“We want to build a star team, not a team of stars. Moreover, we want to build a team with local players at its core,” he said.
He was not discouraged at all by the team’s dismal showing in its recent UFL campaign. The club will build on its strengths and continue with its developmental program to make the team more competitive with each tournament, according to Garcia.
Hans Smit, the technical director of De La Salle University who organized the club about thirteen years ago before it was eventually christened as Green Archers United FC in 2009, was also very optimistic on the club’s future.
“We have Coach Dolfo (Rodolfo Alicante) whose specialty is possession football and we have Coach Frank (Franklin Muescan) who strategizes on incursions and goal delivery. We also have one of the best goalkeeping coaches in Coach Lolong (Florante Valencia),” Smit revealed.
While we were near the cellar during the past UFL Cup, we lost in very competitive, tightly fought fashion. It was never by a blow-out when we lost, added Smit.
True enough, during the friendly against Ceres FC at the North pitch last Saturday, the Green Archers displayed their sting by humbling the local booters, 3-0. With precise passing and disciplined offense, Green Archers blasted Ceres behind the goals of Reynald Villareal, Gabriel Olowoyeye and Ayi Nii Aryee.

Globe Telecom backs Green Archers FC

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom reaffirmed its support to Philippine football as it signed a three-year sponsorship pact with the Green Archers Football Club, which is currently seeing action in the United Football League’s first division.
The team was put up in 1998 when multi-titled De La Salle Santiago Zobel School and De La Salle University football coach Hans Smit brought together a group of La Salle alumni to form the Alabang Grins.
The Grins qualified as sixth out of 15 teams in the then UFL in 2009. The following year, the team was opened to other football players and non-La Sallians from all over the country before it changed its name to the Green Archers United Football Club to reflect the diversity of the squad.
While keeping a highly competitive squad, the GAUFC has also been helping in the development of the sport through clinics, training programs and participation in football tournaments for its members. The UFC is an annual event composed of a Cup and League tournament with two divisions featuring 22 teams.
“Globe is relentless in supporting sports teams, especially those coming from the grassroots. We believe that the Green Archers United Football Club has huge potential in steering the country towards excellence in the field of sports and athletics, particularly in football, with their passion, talent and determination,” said Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu.
