By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.
The Western Visayas Men’s Football team is eyeing to regain its supremacy as it entered the championship match against Davao in the ongoing 2013 National Private Schools Athletic Association meet in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
As of press time, the Coach Freddie “Nene” Lazarito-mentored Visayan squad is playing against reigning first runner-up titlist Davaoeños, following its 5-nil victory over CALABARZON during the semifinals yesterday morning.
Jimuel Ariola opened the Ceres-bankrolled squad with a goal in the early 22nd minute of the match to close a 1-nil lead in the first half.
However, the WV booters came out with a strong second half as they nailed three goals in only five minutes with J Baguioro scoring in the 51st and 55th minutes, while Peter Sobredo shared another in the 53rd minute of the game.
CLABARZON tried to take some run but could not break the tight defense employed by the Visayan squad as they protect their 4-nil advantage.
And before the final whistle was blown, Joel Bedia sent WV fifth goal in the 89th minute to seal the match.
On the other hand, Davao earned its trip to the finals after beating Dipolog, 1-nil.
Even before the squad left for the National PRISAA, Lazarito stressed that he is confident that his team will win this competition as he finds his current squad to be stronger compared to the squad which saw action in the Regional PRISAA.
Completing the WV squad are Negrense keeper Jurex Replentes, Jose Emmanuel Thomas Diel, Anthony Tongson, Florence Ian Agraviador, Angelo Gabriel Bayohan, Marson dela Torre, Ralph Christian Layumas, Lope Mayagma III, Norman Seloterio and Femar John Suganob.
Iloilo reinforcements include Tristan Kit Robles, Elmar Nathaniel Boblo from Central Philippine University; and John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University’s midfielders Patrick John Berdin and Peter John Sobredo, and right wing Mark Anthony Sumabong./
